This another reason for players to go to the school for the school, and NOT for the coach.
Any player who goes to college exclusively to play for a coach is livin' in a fool's paradise. Wayne Simien's statement "I gave my shoulder for him" is pure bogus. The Jayhawks (players, administration) knew that Carolina was gonna call again, sooner or later. And the second calling was gonna be too strong to pass up.
Roy put in his time at Kansas (15 years), and is one of the best coaches in the business. But I do take issue with coaches who stay one minute and then chase the money. And many of them have not developed themselves as coaches. And you wonder why most of them can't beat a 2-3 zone (another discussion).
The Jayhawks are looking at Bill Self (Illinois) as a replacement. How 'bout Johnny Dawkins? Peace.

Say MHD,Einnod23, I feel the next coach at Kansas should be Lon Kruger on the low, Lon Kruger's resume is to thick(Very good)to ignore, I wonder why Lon Kruger's name has not been mentioned for a lot of the job openings at so many schools this year, Cats should not look at what he did coaching wise with the Atlanta Hawks because he was not ready for that type setup(Being a Pro coach), To be a coach in the League(NBA), You have to have some sort of Feel/Knowledge for the Pro game hard, Either as an assistant coach(For years)under the guidance of a veteran coach who knows the science(The game), Were at least you have a feel for the cats in the league, And like so,so,many of todays college coaches, They do not have a feel or knowledge of the League(NBA), And it shows when they coach on the NBA Level hard(LOL), The only cats who managed to come from a college environment and coach in the League(NBA)and was successful doing it was cats like Rick Pitino(Who was an assistant coach with the Knicks in the early 80's under Hubie Brown), Chuck Daly(Who used to coach at the University of Pennsylvania in the 70's and was an assistant coach under Billy Cunningham with the Philadelphia 76'ers in the mid to late 70's,
Not to many college coaches can make that transition because a college coaches time is spent Developing,Mentoring, recruiting, cutting corners if your illegal, etc, for his college team(Which is the very reason why college coaches should never think about stepping to the League(NBA), But Lon Kruger is equipped to step right in at Kansas and i strongly believe Kansas would not miss a beat, He has the same type of style of play that Roy Williams had at Kansas(Uptempo)and the young cats love to play up and down the floor, But Lon Kruger is Organized and disciplined enough not to cut any corners(Cheating)basketball wise and academically(Getting Professors to change grades), And he's a very good recruiter, So the headlining cats will still come to Kansas(Just like they did When Roy Williams was there), But Bill Self would be a very good choice also(Getting him to leave Illinois would be very hard since he's been doing very well the last few years there)Johnny Dawkins, I feel could make a good College coach, But for the Kansas Job you want a cat who has a very, very, good resume when it comes to winning and keeping a program running successfully(No on the job training joint). Roy Williams being at North Carolina means that Duke will not dominate the league like they have been doing(Sort of like Florida State in Football)for the last few years, And If North Carolina signs Darryl Watkins out of Patterson,New Jersey(Which they are expected to do very soon), They definitely will be a top 5 team next year(On the low), Darryl Watkins is 6'10 and will enable Sean May to play his natural position upfront, I have this to say about the North Carolina Program, All the teams that took advantage over North Carolina the last 2 years(Running the score up)like Maryland,Wake Forest,Duke,NC State,Kentucky, etc, I'll be waiting to see if those schools and any other schools will be able to continue running the score up right about now(LOL).

This is a very good move for the Tarheels. They have effectively eliminated what could have resulted in the collapse of a once storied program (think Georgetown and UCLA). Roy has the right understanding of Carolina politics (Matt should have but didn't). Roy knows the game (and can teach it, which is very important). I think that his heart is in it now (it wasn't 3 years ago), that also is important. It's going to be very interesting watching Roy and Coach K battle each other (throw Gary Williams in there as well) for ACC dominance. You can't feel sorry for Kansas because he gave them 15 good years.
Forget about never having won a Championship because he's in the "drivers seat". Anything he needs from the University and Alumni is his for the asking.

The way the folks at Kansas are acting, it may take a few years to recover at Jayhawk Land.
The next coach will NOT be treated well. I smell a Steve Lavin II. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Say einnod23, In reference to your comment, 'The way the folks at Kansas are acting, It may take a few years to recover at Jayhawk Land', I'll say this, The Fans,Media,Administrators,Student body, etc, at Kansas who believe it will take a long time to recover from Roy Williams leaving, Don't know the History of a cat like Lon Kruger(If he's hired at Kansas)(LOL). If i were the President or AD(Athletic Director)of Kansas, Lon Kruger would be the first cat that i would get intouch with, Lon Kruger has been doing much work on the college level for decades going back to his days coaching at Pan American in 1982(He Put that program back on the map),
Then he put Kansas State back on the map in 1986-1990(Mitch Richmond played for Lon Kruger during this timeframe),Lon Kruger took Florida to the final 4 in 1994(With one of my favorite cats from that Florida team Demetrie Hill who should have been in the League/NBA),Then the work Lon Kruger put in at Illinois taking over for Lou Henson(who was crazy undercover for years on the low, especially in the recruiting of Chicago cats like Bruce Douglas and Efrem Winters in the early 80's and also Russell Cross who signed with Purdue in the early 80's), I truely believe if Lon Kruger is selected for the spot at Kansas, The Kansas program will be in very, very, good hands for years to come, I definitely agree with your comment on today's coaches, Quiet as its kept the reason why alot of todays coaches are weak is there's a strong disrespect for fundementals on all levels of Basketball(Street,High School,College,Pro's), The coaches of today only think about money and the best coaching opportuinity(Even the AAU/summer league coaches are making deals with cats like Sonny Vaccaro from Adidas/Who has the nerve to call himself a basketball Promoter, and Phil Knight/CEO of Nike), To me, Today's Cats/Coaches look at fundementals as being weak and don't stress teaching them because alot of Coaches don't know them(fundementals)themselves(Like playing against a 2-3 zone like you mentioned earlier), You know Basketball is in a very, very, bad state when a coach cannot run an Offense against a zone(The best team i ever saw play a 2-3 zone was the Michigan State Team in 1979 with Magic Johnson,Greg Kelser,Jay Vincent,Ron Charles, and crew), And young cats bug when they see old school cats like Michael Jordan,Karl Malone, John Stockton, still rocking at 40 plus years of age(LOL), That shit(Rocking cats at the age of 40 and up)never would have happened back back in the day(fundementals or not), Young cats have to learn to respect the game by making a strong commitment to not only learn, But master the fundementals at a very young age, But again the young coaches have to know the science(The game) themselves. Say JW, I don't think Georgetown's Program has collasped like you mentioned earlier, Craig Esherick has done a good job with what he has to work with talent wise(Georgetown was not doing so well when John Thompson was there after Alonzo Mourning stepped(Graduated in 1992), I feel Craig Esherick is a good coach, Now The recruting has to get alot better, But as long as cats are Graduating on time, And you when at least 18 games a year, I feel Craig Esherick's job will be secure, Also I feel the Job Skip Prosser has done at Wake Forest the past few years has been very good were he should be included into that ACC rivalary thing along with the other cats who were named.

Hey Mike, collapsed may not be the right word when talking about Georgetown. Craig was virtually unknown when he took over the program. When a Coach like John Thompson or Dean Smith retires, naturally people expect a replacement to be a high profile coach. I think Georgetown is still a good school but I think a lot of other schools have since caught up and surpassed them. Carolina was in good hands after Dean because Guthridge had been an assistant damn near as long as Dean had been coach. I do agree with you assessment about today's players. In my opinion too many rely on athleticism and not enough on fundamentals. They can't shoot consistently worth a damn. If you look at Kwame last year being selected No. 1, they don't understand where they are supposed to be on defense. These guys know they are going to get paid regardless (fundalmentals or no fundamentals) because they have a contract. On another note, the players have got to learn to respect the Coaches (think Doug Collins). This behavior starts in AAU continues thru college. And yeah, you can throw Wake in mix

Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals.
Back in the day, coaches used to beat the 2-3 zone with the 1-3-1 zone offense, with the top scorer being the 1 roaming on the baseline. The emphasis was the high percentage shot (inside). The greatest baseline player in the history of the college game was Walter Berry. And Roger McCready and Ed Pinkney not too far behind.
Now with the 3 point shot, the emphasis is on chuckin' threes. Problem is, too many of them are being thrown up, resulting in lower shooting percentages. I used to knock Jim Boeheim on his "overuse" of the 2-3, especially during games where shooters would be hot from 30 foot. But I realized that 30 footers aren't gonna go in every night. That's why Jim's the 2003 champ and I'm just talkin' junk on this thread.
With respect to AAU, Kenny Smith has been repeating this for years: That American players know how to play, and foreign players know how to play the game. AAU's do not emphasise learning the game. They just roll the ball out and just let them run and gun, with all the big fish coaches sitting on the sidelines. This keeps up, and the whole draft will be foreign-born. Peace.

Say JW, I'm not trying to take up for Craig Esherick(Georgetown Head Coach), But John Thompson left him(Craig Esherick)in a very difficult position not only personnnel wise with the team, But with recruiting also with cats(Potential recruits)being caught off guard when John Thompson suddenly retired, Also John Thompson did not leave Craig Esherick with many cats who were nice(Who could play)at the time of his retirement in 1999, While Dean Smith Left Bill Gutheridge with a CREW(Antwan Jamison,Ed Cota,Vince Carter,Shammond Williams)to work with, Plus, North Carolina's recruiting never fell off through the years(And there still one of the best schools when it comes to getting the best cats in the country for decades going back to the 60's), While at Georgetown, On the low, After Pat(Pat Ewing)left in 1985, Georgetown's recruiting has been down through the years(To me, Alonzo Mourning was playing with a Gym class all of his 4 years at Georgetown, when he should have been playing with a crew like Pat did in the early to mid 80's), Craig Esherick had been an assistant coach at Georgetown under John Thompson for over 20 years he was there before Mike Riley(Currently the Top assistant coach at Georgetown), So, I feel he had to learn alot from John Thompson in reference to knowing the science(The game), I could toast(Being very Critical)today's cats for years on the fundamentals of the game of Basketball, Hopefully, There are some young coaches out there with a thirst for Teaching the game the right way like my man Bob Hurley(Coaching 30 plus years)at St.Anthoney's in Jersey City New Jersey, And Jack Curran at Molloy High School in Queens,New York who coached cats like Kenny Smith,Kenny Anderson,Kevin Joyce(South Carolina),Shandue McNeil(St.Bonaventure)etc, Coaches like these cats always teach the game the right way, Bob Hurley's resume of cats coached at St,Anthoney's looks like alittle bit like this:
Dave Rivers(Notre Dame),Kenny Wilson(Villanova),Mandy Johnson(Marquette),Jerry Walker(Steon Hall),Terry Dehere(Seton Hall),Roderick Rhodes(Kentucky/USC/Houston Rockets),Rashown McCloud(St.John's/Duke),Jalil Roberts(Wisconsin),etc, Jack Curran has been coaching at Molloy for over 50 years(Word)and he(Jack Curran) never wanted to coach anywhere else, Basketball needs alot more cats like these two.

Mike,
Once again, thanks for the schoolin'. And good points on Lon Krueger. Just remember, though, if Donyell Marshall hits at least one of the two free throws he missed, Florida's NOT in the Final Four in '94.
And everytime I would see Da Meat Hook (Hill), I would hum the intro to Fat Albert. Peace.
