...will have let another missile loose into the sea of Japan. Obviously letting the world know that it's got the means to destroy Japan and South Korea..

And I think to myself, what a beautiful world!

They fired a medium-range cruise missle last Saturday, flew along the border of South Korea and landed in the Sea of Japan, at exactly the same time as the Japanese Pime Minister was in South Korea to meet their new President.

North Korea has just sent out a warning that they intend to fire another similar missle this afternoon and it will land 50 or so kilometres off the northern shores of Japan.

Some negotiation is needed over here, they want the US to negotiate with them, but the US is ignoring them and may even say it's a job for the UN.

Pretty two-faced really, North Korea has the weapons and will be prepared to give them up, probably a long with it's nuclear program, if the US would give them aid and oil. Pretty sneaky by N.Korea I know, but that's the way they negotiate for what they need, very traditional soviet tactics (Korea*look we can do, lets talk, US*here's some oil and $$$, now chill out..).

With the problems in Iraq and now N.Korea flexing it's muscles it doesn't bode well for 2003.

Japan has no nukes, for obvious reason, being the only country where one has been used, they have a natural eversion to such weapons, but now they are in discussions about whether we should get tooled up with these mad weapons..not good :(

Interesting how circumstances repeat themselves. Before the attack on Pearl Harbor we were in diplomatic talks with Japan after we decided to stop sending them oil. They pulled us into WWII and we dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As a result of their surrender, a treaty was signed by Japan that limited them to a having only a defensive military force.

N. Korea restarted their nuclear reactor and said it was because we had stopped sending them oil and they needed an energy source. Unlike Japan, they have broken treaties that limit the ability to attack other countries.

We have sent Patriot missiles to Israel to protect them from Saddam's scuds. It's beginning to look like our Patriot crews in Japan and our side of the DMZ will see more action. Anyone stationed in Korea, Japan, Hawaii, or Ft. Lewis, WA have more to worry about than the troops in Kuwait.

We need some prompt diplomacy or history may indeed repeat itself, with some disastrous consequences.

The US is building up their forces Gaum as we speak..

The treaty you talk of with Japan like the one with Germany is well expired. Japan can now do whatever it wants to defend itself. They are no longer tied to this agreement. They will not build nuclear weapons after what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They have the authority and would no longer be breaking any treaty if they got nuclear weapons, but will not go down that route because they have seen the destructive force of such weapons first hand.

Matthius, you are right, that treaty has expired. I should have elaborated that Japan never broke that treaty when it was in effect.

On the other hand, many agreements with N Korea have been in place since the cease fire in the 50s and there have been numerous violations. What concerns me is that Bush constantly calls Saddam a threat and says he will attack us but the real danger is an attack on our troops in Japan and Korea.

How many Iraqi jets have challenged our aircraft? How many missiles has Saddam lobbed at a country where our troops are stationed? I pray that GW's obsession with Saddam doesn't cost lives in S. Korea and Japan.

Peace

I didn't know the situation with North Korea was getting so intense. America will be facing another crisis soon if North Korea keeps this up. Thanks for the post.
