Yesterday was April Fools Day, it was the same day that Marvin Gaye was shot & killed by his father.
The man & his music are truly missed. :(
I think Marvin Gaye's song "Mercy Mercy Me" would be an appropriate song for our soldiers.
We love you Marvin. graemlins/remybussi.gif

I can remember hearing a radio announcer announcing it on air that Marvin Gaye was dead. Everybody thought it was a April Fools joke but it turned out to be real. :(

The Death of Marvin Gaye's Father...And Killer
by Joal Ryan
Oct 27, 1998, 6:45 AM PT
back to story
A quiet end for the man who brought Motown legend Marvin Gaye to such a violent one.
Marvin P. Gay Sr.--the Grammy-winning singer's father, as well as his killer--slipped away from pneumonia in a Southern California hospital on October 17, it's now been learned. He was 84.
Gay (which was the family surname--the famed performer added the "e" on his own) and his son had a notoriously volatile relationship--never more so than on April 1, 1984, when Marvin Sr. fatally shot his namesake during an argument at the family's Los Angeles home. It was the day before Marvin Gaye's 45th birthday.
The elder Gay, a onetime pastor, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to five years' probation. He lived out his last days at a rest home in Long Beach, California.
His bullets silenced the voice of classic grooves like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Let's Get It On" and "Sexual Healing."
Marvin Gaye was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Oh that Marvin Gaye .. I was wondering who Marvin Gay was ... d'oh. J/k. graemlins/tongueout.gif

One man should not have such power!! graemlins/nono.gif Hahahaha your crazy.
Marvin had a smooth & mellow voice, his lyrics are much different from the music you hear now.
Example: I'M GONNA BE STROAKING YOU, IN AND OUT, UP AND DOWN, ALL AROUND. I LOVE TO HEAR YOU BABY MAKE THOSE SOUNDS".
Lots of baby's were made from that song alone. I can't think of the name of the album but if your familiar with Jimmy Walker/J.J. from "Good Times" there was a portrait that he painted, it was a disco scene with alot of black folks dancing. It's the same painting on Marvin Gayes album with that song. Also "You Sure Love To Ball" is on that same album.

Austin I'm gonna find out the name of that album, my girl Cassandra has it, she's gonna call me in about 30 minutes.
This album as well as "What's going on" are dynamic. Most of the songs on both albums they did give radio play because they were so provocative.
My parents & my aunts used to scream & fall out when Marvin Gaye came on the radio, I guess that's why I love him so.
I didn't really like him when he was with Tammy Terrell, I was really young then. I liked him more when he went off on his own.

Marvin's music has made a whole lot of baby's  graemlins/thumbsup.gif </font>[/QUOTE]Got both "What's..." and "Let's..." (both Deluxe Editions)
I play "Flying High (In The Friendly Skies)" on my Fender 62 P Bass (Reissue), though I'm far from being James Jamerson (Motown's bassist). I
read that Jamerson was so drunk during a "What's Going On" session, he played one of the tracks lying on the floor. graemlins/all_coholic.gif Got a feeling it's this track.
Flying High (In The Friendly Skies):
"I go to the place
where danger awaits me

to foresake me"

wow- I didn't know that April 1st was the day Marvin Gay Sr. shot his son, what's up with him only getting 5 years of probation for the murder? that's insane.
It's funny that this should all come up because I am currently in the middle of reading "Divided Soul," an amazing biography of Marvin by the writer David Ritts. It's the most beautifully written biography I have ever read. Ritts obviously was extremely knowledgable and passionate about Gaye's music but he also spent hundred of hours interviewing Gaye. the book is filled with so many of Marvin's deep thoughts as well as some CRAZY Motown stories, it's so incredibly moving though, absolutely devastating and uplifting at the same time. I highly recommend reading it. It's so good that I ration myself only a chapter a day so that I can stretch it out and make it last.
(Okay, I am outing myself as the big book nerd that I am with that last statement but I am of course a huge Marvin fan too.)
I could go on and on about this book but while I am posting I should mention that I hunted the book down after seeing this documentary called "Remembering Marvin" a few months ago during a black diaspora film festival at BAM Cinema in Brooklyn. The film focuses on the 2 years of his life when he exiled himself to this harbor city in Belgium. Apparently that was when he was drying out from some severe drug habits but the film doesn't focus on that. It's a totally intimate portrait of one of the most brilliant and saddest souls to ever create music. It shows a really humble, funny and tender hearted Marvin up close and personal. I doubt this film is easy to get your hands on but seek it out if you are interested in Marvin. On the music tip it shows him just jamming with a band in this practice room and he is lazily lying on a couch holding a microphone and he sings almost every song from "In Our Lifetime" It's stunning.

Better yet, you should just get "The Very Best of The Originals" It has the six cuts that Marvin produced and sang background on with them, plus the hard to find 12" version of (my favorite) "Down To Love Town."
FYI: Those six are:
"Baby I'm For Real"
"You're The One"
"I'll Wait For You"
"The Bells"
"We Can Make it Baby"
"Just To Keep You Satisfied"
