This is a message sent to me from a friend I have decided to past along.......
Dear Supporters of Affirmative Action,
Hi, my name is Yayoi, and I am a supporter for BAMN, the
Student Intervenors in Grutter v Bollinger, (the University of Michigan Law
School affirmative action case), and the organizers of the April 1st, 2003
March on Washington that coincided with the Supreme Court hearing of the two
Michigan affirmative action cases. I am contacting you to ask for your
support for our campaign to stop Ward Connerly's proposed anti-affirmative
action ballot initiative before it gets on the Michigan ballot. This ballot
initiative would ban the use of all affirmative action policies to assure
equal opportunity for women and minorities in hiring, education and
contracting. If affirmative action is banned in Michigan, there will be
national ramifications. Even though the Supreme Court upheld affirmative
action this past summer in the Michigan cases, Connerly is seeking to render
those decisions null and void.
Note: Women benefits the most from affirmative action ... more so than racial minorities. So,by anulling affirmative action policies, those who'd be most affected would be women.
It is essential to defeat Ward Connerly's anti-affirmative action drive
because affirmative action programs are essential to maintaining integration
and equal opportunities for all. Connerly has made clear that if he is
successful in ending affirmative action in Michigan with this ballot
referendum, he will bring the attack to other states in the nation.
We must stop the ballot referendum now - before it gets on the ballot -
because the demographics of Michigan (we are the most segregated state in
the nation in education, and the second most segregated state in housing,
with a large conservative electorate) are such that if the initiative makes
it onto the ballot, we stand a good chance of losing everything we fought so
hard to successfully defend in Grutter and Gratz v Bollinger.
Ward Connerly, the University of California Regent spearheading this attack
has said he plans to start collecting signatures Jan. 2nd, 2004. He needs
to collect approximately 317,000 signatures to qualify his initiative for
the ballot. Therefore, we have a window of about a month to build this
campaign to stop his influx of money and effort to build an organization.
Below you will find more info on the anti-Connerly campaign (including a
link to a petition calling for his removal from the UC Board of Regents),
the national Boycott of Coors Beer (Connerly's most well known funder) and
info on the May 15, 2004 March on Washington for the 50th anniversary of
Brown v. Board of Education.
Your support for these campaigns will be critical in stopping the assault on
the gains of the Civil Rights Movement. If you are part of an organization,
church or union, please endorse the Coors Boycott, the anti-Connerly
petition and start mobilizing now to get everyone you can to DC on May 15th.
See below for a partial list of current endorsers.
Please forward out this email or send the links listed below to friends,
family and co-workers. What you do matters.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our campaign.
Thank you very much,
Yayoi K.
