Happy Birthday Caswell James!!

John Simmons/Soul Foundation

John Simmons is an artist from Chicago.s south side with a passion and musical flair. Born on December 14, 1978, John was destined for music. His father, Bob Simmons, was one of Chicago.s most influential DJs of the 1960s and was a very early musical inspiration. John has been playing music as long as he can remember; his earliest compilations of music date back to 1987. Inspired at a young age, he picked up the trumpet. He was a rather successful player; he won dozens of awards in high school and received top honors in the state as well as in his high school his junior and senior year.

John was an avid fan of music in the 1980s, his formative years. He began making tapes for fellow students as early as third grade. His taste was a combination of rap, rhythm and blues, funk, 70s soul, jazz, blues, and 80.s pop. He began spinning out in the summer of 1990 as he relieved his father of his duties at the family picnic. As John entered high school in 1992, he began to get into more .underground. and dance music. .Underground. to him meant a piece of music that was not on the Billboard charts, that which was not heard by most people, and that which countered most pop music. As he could have been considered a .b-boy,. John rapped, danced and tagged busses through high school.
He caught the spinning bug in 1993, as he was inspired by the sounds of DJs on south side WKKC 89.3 and WBMX 96.3. He was fortunate to have turntables in the basement, so on Thanksgiving Day, while food was on the stove and football was on the television, John went downstairs and got to work. His earliest spinning influence was from DJs like Bad Boy Bill, Julian .Jumpin. Perez, DJ Nephets, Gant Man, Lloyd .Devastating. Jackmaster, as well as fellow students. His early spinning sounds include that of Cajmere, Masters at Work, Paul Johnson, Todd Terry, DJ Sneak, Robert Armani, and DJ Funk. During his junior year, John journeyed a little deeper into the underground, and became fascinated with Chicago.s growing rave scene. In 1996, as John .Break it Down,. he began spinning at spinning at house parties and smaller warehouse and banquet hall parties. He was influenced by the spinning sounds of Derrick Carter, Hyperactive, Danny the Wildchild, Justin Long, and Paul Johnson.
John went full steam ahead into DePaul University, as he started throwing parties. 1997.s .Southside Chicago,. a party he helped coordinate with the Disco Pimps, was legendary. Throwing parties really propelled John into the spotlight, as he and fellow DJ Marcus Watkins became regulars on the underground circuit as Undaground Revolution. His career began to gather energy as he became a local favorite. In 1998, after forging a relationship with DJ Traxx, John became a member of Soul Foundation, Chicago.s largest and arguably deepest, most well-rounded and technically proficient collective of DJs.
John has continued to spin throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest, as well as other destinations across the country. 2002 marked the beginning of John.s global experience as he toured across Germany. At 24, John has made a name for himself and is steadily leaving an imprint on Chicago.s music scene. He has played hundreds of events and club nights alongside legendary DJs and artists such as Ken Ishii, Derrick Carter, Farley .Jackmaster. Funk, Ol. Dirty Bastard, Juan Atkins, Frankie Knuckles, Mark Farina, Derrick May, Strictly Jaz Unit, Frankie Bones, DJ Dan, DJ Hell, Roy Davis Jr, and Theo Parrish.
John.s current spinning style is mostly house, ranging from tracky to disco to deep, and he also dabbles in tech-house and minimal techno. He credits Soul Foundation as his greatest source of musical pleasure and inspiration.
