I am sad to say that I did miserably on this test. Check it out and let me know how you did. Hopefully most of you will fare better than I:

I only got 5 right and I believe most of us won't do much better. It's due to a lack of exposure. All of these groups are vitually non-existent in popular media.

although i was riddled with guilt about guessing the nationality of the asian people pictured, i did actually score a 9.
having a test like that does illustrate a disturbing point about the way we judge people on sight.

I scored seven, but then it is a very difficult test, if I met all these people personally I would score higher...
I wasn't sure what to make of this test, but looking at their site, it seems positive on a whole..
I do know that number 6 and 12 are fine as fine can be!

I don't know why people make such a big deal of not being able to tell the the nationality of people of eastern Asian discent. I doubt that many people can tell the difference between people of European discent or people of African discent based solely on appearance alone.

i thought the test was interesting and insightful. i scored a measily 7, which shows me that i definetly need to get myself informed more on Asian people and far eastern culture.
i keep wondering: how do Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese mothers recognize their sons from the back? B/C if i was walking through Shibuya or Kowloon at lunchhour, I'd be at a loss to tell one person from the next.
works both ways, from what i hear. there's this anecdote (i forget in which context i heard about it), where these three Europeans of different build, height and haircolour were constantly confusing their Chinese Hosts in Shanghai simply because they all had full beards! didnt matter either, that the beards were precisely distinguishable in being fair, dark and red - the Chinese kept mixing up their names and identities repeatedly.
people get confused with my idenity all the time. the most common guesses place me as being Moroccan, Ethiopian, Eritrean, Egyptian and even Turkish (a lot of non-indigenous people here come from these ethnic backgrounds), though i don't have any of the typical features apart from being 'dark'. before i started growing dreadlocks a lot of people had me as an American (a GI no less!) or "Army-bastard" (i.e. spawned out of one of the many and typical black/male/military - white/female/civilian relationships) - funnily enough with dreads people stop mistaking me for an American. and they never consider me to be from the islands.

[/QB]Can people tell the difference between those people of color who's roots are from the Islands as oppossed to those who's roots are primarily from the United States.
Can people tell the difference between people of Indian decent who are from the West Indies as oppossed to those from the East Indies?
What are the differences in looks between Scots, Irish, and English?
What are the differences in looks between peoples born in certain areas of the former Soviet Union.
Can you tell the differences between people born in Angola, Benin, and or Mauritania?
Can you tell the difference between Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Brazillians, Nicaraguans, Angentinians?
This test could apply across the board IMO....

I definitely did not post that link to make fun of anyone or make light of any situation. It is, rather, a way to show us how Asian people do not get sufficient exposure where we live. Thus, it makes it difficult for us, or me anyway, to differentiate between the different cultures. As for having a site ask the difference between Mexican/PR/Cuban, etc., I would actually like to see that. I am sure I would fare much better at it, but what about others? Does that make them racist. Absolutely not! Take it more as an eye opener than as an attempt to put a man down.

Leslie,
the point i was trying to put across is that IMO you can tell these differences to the extent that you study appearances, traits, demeanor, dress, the way people move, act, gesticulate. you can judge a great deal by how reserved or how flamboyant people appear.
i can enter a bar and point out who's from England and who is from the US - even though they're all wearing rugby shirts. it's in the way they wear their baseball caps. look for the difference in haircuts, look how different people greet each other and eat their food. count the number of times they kiss each other and exactly how they embrace. look for the difference in American-worn jeans as opposed to Continental-worn jeans. notice how Italian hand-language differs from that of the French.
the point is: you can tell once you know. if you stick me in a room full of black people, i'll sort out the Americans from the Africans 95% of the time, and i'll tell you whether the Africans come from West- South- or East-Africa.
for me it's a question of how atuned you live to the people within your environment. i think that being atuned is a good thing. and as you can judge by my score, i am not particularly in touch with an 'asian' environment :D . that's why i liked this "test".
peace. ngeso.
BTW i think telling the difference can become crucial in some cases. how? just picture yourself for a moment in some police line-up with 5 other people and somebody about to make a choice. in that instance atunal can be a matter of life and death - yours for instance.

I took the test and only for 7 right. Two of my co-workers that are Korean and Chinese only got 6 right.
This just proves that those three countries share the same gene pool. If you study Asian history, you'll learn that Korea and Japan were first inhabited by people from China.
My mother is Korean and she knows how to speak one of the Chinese dialects. I know that my Korean grandfather was part Chinese also.
One giveaway for Japanese kids is the bleached out hair. Those kids are crazy over there. smile.gif

I got 14 right :D
this test is stupid and ignorant. it assumes that ethnic nationalities have biologically based physical traits that are clearly discernable - thus the reason why people can't tell the difference. if seen in person, cultural mannerisms would be exhibited that may make such distinctions more valid or easier to draw.
this kind of test plays off of stereotypes, obvious or not. japanese kids have crazy hairdos (blond, afros, dreads), thai are darker, etc etc that are all not exclusive to any one ethnicity, simply because ethnicity/nationality isn't a biological factor, rather it's a cultural one.

-KAZI i think thats kind of the point. dont be distracted that its packaged in a "fun" way. The test itself poses many questions. I thought it was really interesting, cause i was pretty much relying on stereotypes to get my answers and i did pretty well, but not perfect. And i think its fair to say that many nationalities have a look, regardless of being offencively stereotypical.

-KAZI Wouldn't "cultural mannerism" imply all (insert group) behave or act alike?
not at all. it would mean that you could draw similarities in behavior (not physical traits) that stem from varying degrees of enculturation. one is learned, the other is not.

couple of things...
a. asian is not just japanese, korean, and chicanese. where are my dark asian borthers and sistas at?!? graemlins/cussing.gif
b. scoring high on this test does not equal a greater cultural awareness of asians. i'm asian (filipino) and only got 7 right, does that mean i am not culturally aware of asian americans? i think not. graemlins/nono.gif
c. but this test does does show how we apply certain prescribed racial/ethnic charateristics when "tried and true" methods (how big the eyes are, color of complexion, what type of designer bag the girl is holding) do not suffice. when i couln't ascertain based on those traits, i looked at their clothing, reasoning "japanese nationals to dress pretty funky". graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
d. did anyone wonder if these people could speak english clearly? none of them looked like fob's (fresh off the boat).
e. since i only scored seven on the test, i have dishonored my ancestors and must perform sepuku (ritualistic self-disembowelment). i will be posting a "leaving the dhp board for the afterlife" thread soon. biggrinangel.gif
