View Full Version : So...Househeads don't drink and support the bar...WHY exactly?
D J 1 3 8

I've seen this mentioned many times on DHP, and there is some truth to it. My question is: WHY?
Is it because:
A) househeads are all recovering alcoholics
B) househeads are just cheap
C) househeads are just plain broke
D) househeads are just too old to drink and still go to work the next day
E) househeads don't want alcohol to interfere with their dancing
F) househeads are on drugs already (like weed, coke, whatever) therefore they require no alcohol consumption.
G) househeads partied SO hard in the 80s & 90s that one more drink might kill them
H) all of the above

its the value system - when one drink is the same price as one domestic 12" - i mean at the end of the day you don't pee away the 12" at least thats the way i look at it.

I can't dance. I listen to loud music and drink.

usually no hot girls like in the hiphop/latin clubs, so you dont need to consume alcohol. Hiphop/spanish clubs are mostly about mackin' so of course everyone wants to get blitzed. house parties are mostly for the music.

Now if you sold weed at house events...no issues.
Some folks do not have it like they did back in the day.Kids, families, jobs, all come into the picture.
Most of the older folks who are still partying, still get in free or haggle their way in,then just come to dance thier asses off.
It's different in certain situations, but the ones who come to party, pay to get in,by drinks..water or likka, and come to dance..are the heart of the whole shabang.
It don't matter if you got DJ Jesus on the box,if the nucleus "the party people" are not there, you just lost out.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure many will), but I think there's also an implicit rejection of alcohol as a "white man's drug" in there as well.
Many househeads make choices that take them out of the consumer mainstream, such as being vegan, riding a bicycle around the city instead of driving, etc. Alcohol would fall into that category, I think. Also, there's an element of "respect your body" spiritualism that's big in the house community.
P.S. I do know that beer was first brewed in Egypt, so it's not technically a white thing...
If you go to mainstream venues you'll no doubt see fighting and other things that aren't "house" mostly due to alcohol consumption.

That's hilarious. It never occurred to me that some would consider alcohol a "white man's drug".
I recognize that there are some spiritual "respect your body" types in the scene. That is evident.
And there is a definitely a lack of alcohol-fueled brawls, but I think the music (& the message) may have more to do with that than the liquor. Househeads just tend to be more respectful of others in general, which leads to much fewer fights.

To answer your question I may have a beer or two when i go out dancing...no liquor...liquor has a tendancy to slow me down...I don't need that on the dancefloor...so water is it when I begin to really get my boogie, dance and sweat on...

The problems you guys are facing are just stupendous as compared to what we have here in Belgium, it almost makes me feel proud to be a Belgian
Can't help but make y'all jealous:
- You can have a beer while walking on the street and say 'Hi' to a cop
- Drinking & Driving, speeding, parking violations are prohibited but the chances of getting caught are slim to none (been driving for 3 years, almost always speeding a bit, in the weekends usually a bit too much on the beer/wine/liquor side and never wear my seat belts, and I'm notorious for parking where I can't...the result is just 4 tickets, all in all some $300 in 3 years)
- Smoking weed / hash is illegal but nowadays it's tolerated almost up to 100%
- With one or two exceptions we have open end at all bars, clubs and parties
- If you would see the amount of alcohol that's being consumed on one of these long nights, be it a club, bar, etc...
So there, get those immigration cards and plain tickets, I'll be happy to take you in until you find a job here smile.gif

I drink like a fish when I go out. But the prices these clubs charge for drink is a fukin rip off. Then you have to tip the snobby bartender that, (btw took 15 minutes to get to you)because if you don't, he/she will never come back to you.

My take: It seems, from my view, that househeads are more about gettin' their dance on, and drinkin is secondary. At hip hop/R&B parties, getting your drink on is first, and dancing is secondary. That's the way I view it.
Let's be real, though. Many bars/clubs may not want to host house events if there's little or no support at the bar. My suggestion for non drinkers--get at least one soda or one bottle of water as a show of support. Peace.

RD i'm curious to know the number of alcohol-related accidents that occur in your country. </font>
The way that damn Belgian beer is...I would expect to see cars crashed all over the damn place. graemlins/all_coholic.gif </font>
We can take it... graemlins/beerchug.gif

Since when does a DJ care about the Bar profits???????????????
So is this why most club owners will not support "House Music Sets" because they don't consume enough at the Bar.
Sorry I'm not cheap but usally drink before I get there.(at home or parking lot) graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Drinks in the club have been know to have the Upper/downer effect on me and is not relaible as a source of social enjoyment.

You have to support the venue or else.
I do not drink. Now, admittedly, I'll have a beer every six months or so, but only because I'm a former beer taster and amateur brewer. I enjoy the taste of a good brew (Red Stripe, Fosters, Elephant, Mamba, or even a Sam Adams or Rolling Rock), but due to diabetes (type 2), my drinking days are over.
But back to the point, I still will buy a bottle of water, a coke & orange juice (a great combination for maintaining your blood sugar level after dancing and sweating it down) or a bottle of Sobe or Mystic (some places here serve that as well).
Why?
Because if the bar/venue doesn't make money, there's no party. So, if there's a party that I go to, I buy something from the bar. I go to the Attic here in Chicago. I buy two or three bottles of water for $2.00 a pop...then I may buy a round for my friends. It's courteous and it helps support the party. Every other venue that I go to, I buy from the bar. It supports the bar and in turn supports the party.
If the party has no cover charge, then you should make a special effort to hit the bar...even if you are buying bottled water.
If a venue has ridiculous prices for their drinks, then don't patronize the place and let the promoter know the reason. If they are smart, they will move their party to a place with better drink prices.
Like any consumer-driven market, your patronage will ultimately determine the success or failure of a party.
$2.50 drafts, $3.00 bottles and $4.50-$5.00 mixed drinks are not unreasonalble prices, considering the economy. Then if the venue has drink specials on your party night, then it's all the better.
At this point in the game, disco/house crowds should take responsibility for supporting their genre. The easiest way for that is to frequent the bar in your given venue.
Hip-Hop crowds keep the bar afloat easily. It's part of the culture/paradigm to buy expensive drinks (shots of Hennessey, bottles of Krystal(sp), a magnum of champagne, etc...) to demonstrate that you're a "high-roller."
Progressive Crowds just drink because they are the prevalent party crowd today and whatever the dominant music style is, the people just follow the trend and drink.
If a venue isn't serving what you want, get together and let them know that you want something particular. Most bar owners will stock special stuff, if they know that somebody will drink it. I got an entire bar in Gary hooked on Red Stripe. One day, I was in a bar that I frequented and I asked for it and they didn't have it. The manager ordered a case the next day. I started drinking it on a regular basis (daily- 2-3 bottles at a time) and when somebody asked me about it, they tried it and it went from there. One day, I walked in, asked for one and found that it was sold out and 7 other people in the bar were drinking it (dammit- they drank up my private stock). After that, they made sure that I would always get my share.
The moral of this story is that if a bar can make money by being nice to you, they will. Any problem that a crowd has with a venue will almost always be based within the crowd. If it is the venue's fault, everyone will know it at once.
'Nuff said....

I think that if a place doesn't charge a cover everyone should buy at least one drink. Drink being , coke, sprite, beer or liqour. A lot of clubs in Chicago don't have the proper licenses to charge so it's free to get in. The only way to pay the DJ, promoter, and staff is from people spending money at the bar.
Basically, if the place has no cover charge, you should assume that the cover charge has been built into the drink prices. Buy a drink and support the DJ /venue that is playing the house that you like. If noone drinks, the format of the venue will change to get people who drink.
So easy a protic can do it (QUAD)

Our crowd has gotten older and unfortunately wiser which in combination creates restraint. Whether it be economic restraint or vice restraint.........
I'll explain.....
Remember when you were 18? Money didn't matter much...yeah we knew the value of it but you shrugged it off cuz you figured you'll get some later somehow...well now combine that with the hormones that were raging through your body on top of the mackin' both males and females did in the club ON top of the serious imbibing of liquor or other substances that your friends always somehow had access to and......well the party was on!!.......
ffwd.....we're in our late 20's, late 30s', mid 40's, "man......the rent/mortgage is due, momma aint payin' for the new car, the kids need new shoes, they're about to cut off the long distance....and they want how much for a mixed drink? uh no thanks i'll take a bottle of Poland Spring please...WHAT? $4 dollars for bottled water? f*ck that! find me an empty bottle ..i'ma fill that bitch up in the bathroom!!"LMAO
yall get my drift?
It's not that "Househeads don't drink" It's just that our fan base has grown up.....hence my constantly ignored plea of needing to infuse new blood into our genre's bloodstream. Think about this...what if your mom and pops told you they were goin' out tonight to the club to go dance and get f@cked up? Tell me you wouldn't do a double take on that one? I'd be like ..."my mom and pa are freaks!!"
This is the number 1 and i mean #1 reason why the clubs are not willing to host our nights...therefore no club exposure = no radio = no new blood = Eventual DEATH and Jazz Cd101.9 status...It's like that poster they always showed us in school about how pcb's effect our ecosystem...the effects aren't noticed until it's too far up the food chain and it's way too late...
just my 2 cents

cause the scene is FULL of ****ing losers. These losers will never say they are losers, no way. What they do is go through utterly useless semantic gyrations that justify their loserdom to themselves.
Cats say they don't drink....crack a bottle and see how fast that teetoaler drains it
Cats say drinks are too expensive...yet will pony up when YOU are buying.
Cats say they can't afford "X"..then get a better paying job (btw..if ya can't afford to party what are you doing in the club)
Cats got kids to raise..yet will be out 3 - 4 -5 nights a week - partying?!
Cats will fly across country to see other peeps yet can't by shit for their kids
Cats waste their talentsdoing nada when they could be making ends in the music business
Cats give a **** about the latest club gossip yet don't know any of the democratic candidates for president
Cats stink yet dont wash cause they're gonna "sweat anyway"
Cats look like slobs yet the only excercise they get is the 10 minute stretches on the dancefloor
Cats **** the dj's cause they wanna be down
Cats know where the new clubs are located yet can't find Iraq on a map
and the wort are cats who are in this scene for years and STILL have no clue about the economics of the club BUSINESS
I can go on but why bother...i'm sure the offended will have very reasonable sounding rebuttals
the bottom line is that this scene is full of losers and underacheivers who just want to party ALL the time

I almost never drink alcohol because I don't particularly enjoy its effects. If it is a "good party" in my estimation I am dancing a whole lot and not even thinking about drinking (even water) although I am usually good for a water or two, even as I find the costs can be patently unreasonable- I have been charged $6 for an 8oz bottle of water. Domestic beers were cheaper! I honestly believe folks should raise the damn covers and give water away and lay off of folks who don't want to drink.

I believe that the reason "house" parties don't do as well at the bar as many other parties is because "house" music and "house" crowds are a tad more enlightened... which might also explain why we use the term "deep" so damn much, I might add.
Excessive alcohol and drug intake are generally signs of escapism. "House", unlike many other forms of popular music played in clubs these days, generally has positive connotations and emotions attached to it - in the lyrics, the keys, the instruments, the dance, the community.
Look at the LOFT parties as a perfect example. Hundreds of people gathering to celebrate life through dance and music as opposed to going to a bar or club to "numb" themselves via substances to the pain and strife of living in this world.
I think a lot of househeads enjoy going out to express through the music & dance their emotions - joy, love, happiness, sadness, pain, & sorrow - as opposed to the other scenes where folks go out to get so f*cked up and/or actually f*cked as a means to forget how miserable they are.
The most common substances taken by house heads enhance the clubbing/music experience rather than make it.
BTW, anyone who knows me will understand the irony here... I guess we're all works in progress.

I always support the bar, but you have to realize, tipping is a taught behavior. Many people have not been taught that tipping brings about good service. For someone who has been disadvantaged all thier life and has not been taught the value of tipping, to them it seems like giving away money for nothing, when actually what you are recieving is better service (and more liquor) in most cases!
