View Full Version : Should you make friends in the Music Biz ?

I'm writing this because over the years, I've tried to make friends with people in the Biz, and all they did was try to backstab me, or use me to get to a certain level of there own.

Do you think it's humanly possible to have a friend in this cut throat biz?

Someone who would be happy for your success as well as you for them ? graemlins/grinyes.gif graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

I think so, but it has to be a genuine friendship based on much more than music.

There is not enough venues or record labels for all the producers and DJ's, that has put a strain on the system (House) folks are starting to panic and cant take the heat. Thats when Jealousy and Envy rears its ugly head. folks start to do things they wouldnt normally do, like backstab, Use, talk about you, and even sometimes try to sabatoge what you are trying to do> When things are fine no one has any reason to act the way they do, but when shit gets a little shakey folks start to react differently they panic and loos the ability to act normal. Just my opinion.

Freind's in this day and age are hard, very hard to come by, It seem's as if society has a knack of forgetting who was there with you from day one until now.
Yet all I can say is watch out for your own matter's at heart, especialy when it come's down to your own livelihood.

Well said ROn, my thoughts exactely.\

Over here in Holland things are even worse. Lots of labels are owned or runned by poeple who are in there because of the coolness of the bizz and not because they got sincere love for the music . Since the bizznizz aint going to smooth in the industry nowadays, not manny young starting musicians get a chance to get their stuff heard. The same thing goes for dj's.

As for friendship among musicians???

I think there can be,,,, as long as you both love the music enough to put your ego's aside for the sake of music and the friendship.

you have to be 2 human beings talking about your lives first. Life interests that go beyond music. 2 DJs/musicians talking about music or the business 2nd.

Always keep it in that order, once you get to the point of friendship.

NOWADAYS I TEND TO TELL MY CLOSEST FRIENDS THE "DAY ONE" THEORY;

1.YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW FAR YOU GO IN THE INDUSTRY. IT IS UP TO YOU TO LEARN THE BUSINESS OF THE INDUSTRY AND NOT DEPEND ON OTHER FOLKS TO DO IT FOR YOU.

2. IF SOMEONE GIVES YOU A TIP, LESSON, OR A TOOL OF HELP TO FURTHER YOUR KNOWLEDGE, MAKE SURE YOU OFFER SOME TYPE OF REPAYMENT OR THANK THEM. YOU WILL WITHOUT A DOUBT EARN MUCH RESPECT, AND GET MORE BUSINESS PROSPECTS.

3.I'VE LEARNED TO ASK "WILL YOU EXPECT ANYTHING IN RETURN FOR THIS FAVOR?" I DO THIS CAUSE I KNOW SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF THE "THROW IT BACK IN YOUR FACE" EFFECT AND FRIENDSHIPS IN THIS BUSINESS HAVE BEEN SEVERED BECAUSE OF IT. THAT WAY, THEY WILL UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S A SUPPLEMENTARY THING AND THEY'LL KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO WITH OR WITHOUT THE FAVOR.

4.WHILE I WILL HELP YOU WHEN OR IF THE SITUATION REQUIRES, "DON'T" EXPECT IT EVERY RIP! DON'T GET UPSET AT ME IF I'M NOT AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, REMEMBER, THE ONLY THING I OWE ANYONE IN THIS WORLD IS RESPECT, NOTHING MORE.

5. HAVE A PLAN "B" IF YOU MUST. THE ONLY SURE THING IN THIS LIFE IS TAXES AND DEATH. MY WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH MY GUY (THE OTHER HALF OF BLUEBLACKNESS) IS, IF I'M TIRED AND NOT ABLE TO BE AT THE STUDIO, THEN PROCEED WITH WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, AND MYSELF, LIKEWISE. WE WILL ALWAYS REMAIN FRIENDS BEFORE AND AFTER THE "MUSIC BUSINESS"

6. AND RON, YOU WORKED WITH ME BEFORE AND YOU KNOW MY MOTTO, I'LL WORK WITH THOSE THAT WILL WORK WITH ME. NEVER NOTHIN PERSONAL IF ITS NOT IN YOUR INTEREST AT THE MOMENT. I RESPECT THAT.

IN RETROSPECT, THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE WAYS TO MAKE GREAT FRIENDS SUCH AS YOURSELF, AND MAKE GOOD BUSINESS CONTACTS, THAT WAY "PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND"

Stay with me here......"SPORTSMANSHIP". Old fashioned cliche, but cliche based on TRUTH.
In my observations, many of you on this board are BASKETBALL fans, right? How many teams are there?
How many players per team? How many superstars?
Stay with me here......
How many guys do you see KILLING each other on opposing teams, but going out to dinner together? Vacationing together? PLENTY. And the reason is......they learned SPORTSMANSHIP. The idea that there is room to compete against each other out of SKILL and not HATE. It may SOUND naive, but I'm 41 years old......and have PLENTY of friends (the kind that call to talk about TV shows or a book we read or to hang out and....play records and CDs playing canyoutopthis?) and the ONE back stabber could be seen from miles away- not JUST by me but by everybody. So, I cut his ass loose. BUT I wish him WELL. I have even BIG UPPED him on THIS board. WHY? Because he is a skillful DJ. One of the very best. He just doesnt know SPORTSMANSHIP...and got "cut" from the team. But at the end of the day....the world is still turning.

one simple answer, no. most people i met in the music industry have been plastic. it's about them. from radio to the labels.

relationships break up either b4 or after the personal agenda is met.

i would say yes, you can have friends but you certainly have to be careful. friendships grow over time and are few and far betweeen. most of my friendships in this business are just that, business. we're not really visiting each others homes or checking up on each other. it's more professional with mutual respect.

i've learned that i can't work with people with inflated ego's.

peace ron.

We'd first have to agree on the meaning of friends...yet I am sure its possible.

The music is indispensable to the equation, whether producer, Dj or audio-engineer, promoter, what have you.....like mathematics, its universal.

Secondly, none of us pasted the perfection test, so we have to bend, adjust and change to things we're partial to or we just dont understand in others. For the record, put me behind the screen, because its really not about personalities.....as all the legends in House music atest to.

I'd hope cats can come together just for seeing the importance of unity and then secondly to continue the music, but I am too damn idealistic...

With The Creator anything is possible and believing the positive is most the battle.

I Love all of the responses you all have given, but there is one more question.

Is Money the key to changing a Music friendship ?

Is having all the Girls a way to change it ?

And, If someone get's more pub in your Production team than you, will that change it ? AR15firing.gif

you can't control other people. if these things influence them, then that is their trip, you can only just hope they come back around.

all you can do is make sure you communicate the truth and be real with yourself and with them, i think.

maybe i'm just a flaky californian, but i think that everyone has their own set of insecurities, i have mine, you have yours, etc. it could be success-related, girl related, whatever. that's just part of having friends and knowing that nobody's perfect.

if business is mixed with a friendship and you can't make the business part work, then the business side can just be done, let it go. but if you can still love the person and have a friendship on whatever level and it can stay positive then i would do my part to keep that because that's what i value most.

I AGREE WITH YOU SOCRATES....
SAME OVER HERE. PEOPLE'S EGOS MAKE THEM MISS OUT ON TONS OF SERIOUS BLESSINGS WHERE PEOPLE LIKE ME SAVE WHAT LITTLE EGO I HAVE FOR THE PERFORMANCE. I TOO HAVE TRIED TO REACH OUT TO PEOPLE AND FOR WHAT EVER REASON ON A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL THEY BLOW ME OFF. CATS ARE JUST ****IN SHADY. BUT ALAS IN ALL OF MY BITCHING, I STILL KEEP THESE SAME FRIENDS. I JUST TRY TO SEPERATE PEOPLE WHO I WORK WITH FROM THE PEOPLE I CHILL WITH. OR IF THEY **** UP I DON'T WORK WITH THEM. WELL LET ME BACK UP, CAUSE I AM STILL FRIENDS WITH MY OLD BAND MATES, WE ARE JUST NOT A BAND ANYMORE. BUT ALL I CAN SAY RON IS YES, YOU KNOW WHO YOU TRUST AND WHO YOU DON'T AND KNOW THAT THAT IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM IF THESE HATIN ASS PEOPLE DON'T WANNA BE COOL WITH YOU. DON'T BLOCK YOUR BLESSINGS BRO. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYIN? JUST CATS THAT YOU CAN'T WORK WITH JUST BE CORDIAL....YOU KNOW WHO YOUR REAL PEEPS ARE. WHO'S DOWN WITH YOU AND WHO'S NOT. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ANYWAY? HOLLA AT ME SOON, SAW YOUR PIC IN A FEW PUBLICATIONS. YOU KNOW WE GO BACK LIKE FAHEY FLYNN ON THE FAMILY CLASSICS. YOU GOOD PEOPLES MAN.
