Brooklyn has the top bid for the New Jersey Nets!
Mega builder Bruce Ratner and superstar rapper Jay-Z to be the new owner’s of the team.
The plan to make a new arena downtown Brooklyn is on the table. The Stadium is to be built over the Long Island Rail Road station at Flatbush & Atlantic avenues.
Mayor Mike Bloomberge supports the plan but neighborhood protesters believe bringing the team to Ft. Greene and Park Slope will ruin the quality of life in the area.
What’s your thought on this?

Terrible idea..That area is too crowded with cars now. I didnt hear about Jay=z owning the team..Im sure he doesnt have 275 million to invest.

jay-z is one of many investors. I think it is a good idea but not that area. it is way to much traffic.

Being a transportation hub (the Flatbush/Atlantic junction), I think this would result in sell-outs for the team. Furthermore does the city get crowded for the Knicks? It wont be a problem.

It's not gonna happen. there are 2 group of investors wanting to keep the nets in Jersey. One lead by senator John Corzine(He has more money then Jay-Z). Plus there are plans to build a new stadium in the meadowlands.

The other part of the proposal that peeps are sleeping on is that the stadium plans include new housing development and retail spaces. I think it would be an economic shot in the arm for Brooklyn and a venue befitting of one of the largest cities in the country ( if it were a city)

Jay Z is not the prime investor the construction Mongol Bruce Ratner is. He is the man responsible for the construction over that transportation hub and he owns the building across the street that Path-Mark, Office Depot & Old Navy leases.
I don't know how much $$$$$ Jay Z has but apparently he has enough to be rolling with Mr. Ratner.
Now as for that already congested area, putting a stadium in that location is not such a good idea. Yeah, it would be easy access to the games for everyone in the 5 boroughs and beyond but it’s already a very busy intersection.
I think putting the stadium there would cause excitement to the borough’s economy but it would also lead to more pan handling and street vendors. yuck!

Some additional facts
The investment group is led by developer Bruce Ratner
The plans do not call for public financing
The estimated cost of the project is 2.1 billion dollars
The aena would seat 19000 and cover 19800 square feet
4500 affordable residential units coverin 4.4 million square feet would be built
2.1 million square feet of commercial office space would be built
300000 square feet of retail space would be built
I thik this project is a good thing if it gets done
Mr Ratner is also the developer behid Metrotech and one must concede that that project has revitalized downtown Brooklyn and brough many new jobs and stability to the area

Mr. Ratners clan is just the highest bidders at the moment.
Also, the current owner is undecided if he wants to let the team go but that is subject to change as we all know cash rule everything around me CREAM ..GOTTA GOT MONEY... Dollar Dollar Bill YA'llll!

I live THREE FUCKING BLOCKS from the proposed site, my neighborhood--one with lots of desirable housing--would be dismantled, and thoroughly trashed on a regularly basis. So....I'm not happy. I'm considering a visit with a santero.

If they really want to give Brooklyn a shot in the arm, why not demolish that decaying monstronsity called the Fulton Mall where they can be really indulgent?

I just like to expand on one of your facts.
There will be 4,000 residential units to be build but by law 1,000 of them have to be affordable units.
They never mentioned how affordable?
Downtown Brooklyn is already thriving and this project would just bust the borough out of it's seams!

AR15firing.gif Don't get me wrong I am all for a sports team coming to Brooklyn but I agree 100% that the desired location sucks big time.
The suggestion about demolishing the Fulton Mall is a good one.
The two main problems with that idea is no parking and not enough land to build a stadium to fit 20k seats.
Ps. I have been trying to move in your area for a while now. I hope your apartment is rent stabilized! Its been said that if this plan does succeed the property value and rents in that neighborhood is going to rise really high.

I do realize that I my days in my building may be coming to an end. It's rent stabilized, but the owner's tax benefits run out in 2005. That means the owner could jack the rents to market rate, with or without the Brooklyn Nets.
Despite all of the circumstances, I do support the coming(?) of the Brooklyn Nets. I would have hoped, however, that piece of garbage that's calling itself an Atlantic Terminal Mall (worse than Fulton Mall--it's bigger) could be demolished in favor of the arena, as opposed to the LIRR train yard (across the street from the so-called Mall, which would knock off a block).
Alantic and Flatbush Airvenyues (the area in question) is being revitalized. A new office building is being built as we speak, and loooooooong overdue renovation of the Atlantic Avenue subway shall be completed by Spring/Summer 2004.

A little history. The site of the current Atlantic Terminal Mall (across the street from the LIRR train yard, the proposed Nets site) is the exact spot where Walter O'Malley wanted to put the Dodgers (two train stops from Ebbetts). He was rejected by a man named Robert Moses, then the most powerful man in New York. O'Malley responded by shipping out to LA.
Anyone who is a resident of the City of New York should read "The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York". Stunning account of how Mr. Moses wielded power in this city. And guess what: Amonst 35 years after he retired (and 20+ years after his death), the effects of his legacy still haven't warn off! Peace.
