This Week's Guest DJ:
OPIE KUTTINGHAM

http://www.d-jam.com/djculture/images/opiepic.jpg

Opie Kuttingham was born Patrick Shea on December 12, 1971. As a child in the early 1980s, he was drumming along with the songs on the radio with a pair of pencils on his parents’ couch cushions. In 1982, he joined his grade school band as a drummer. In 1984, he was introduced to hip-hop culture and breakdancing. During 1984 and 1985, he was hitting local teen dance clubs and watching the DJs and how they played their records. In 1985, before he even had turntables of his own, he entered a local DJ competition and was given his first alias, "Mix Master" Pat.

In 1986 as a graduation gift, his parents invested in his first official DJ system and from then on, it was nothing but practice. When all of the other kids were playing during the summer, he was in his bedroom honing his DJ skills. He began playing small basement parties with some lone-minded friends. In 1987 he began playing at a local teen club called Squeezers. When Squeezers closed, Opie went back to the bedroom for more practice. At the same time, he was hitting the parties in other towns, and was highly influenced by the DJs he was seeing at these parties as well as the DJs he was hearing on the radio such as Bad Boy Bill and Julian "Jumpin" Perez.

In 1992, when he turned 21, he began playing at local dance clubs. His residencies include Poor Richards, Bermuda Bob’s, and the Frigate. In 1995 Opie was recruited into the MIXXMOBB DJ Crew founded by one of his main influences, Alan "Baddmixx" Boyd. He then began pumping out promotional mixtapes to spread his name and the skills he practiced hard to achieve.

This Week's Guest DJ:
SHAWN NEW

http://www.d-jam.com/djculture/images/shawnpic.jpg

My name is Shawn New, I am 26 years old and currently residing in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I have lived many other places throughout the Midwest and made my home in Iowa.
I was first introduced to electronic music at the very young age of 16. I ventured to a show in Chicago IL with a few friends of mine and I was overtaken by the environment that was created. I stood in front of the deejay and I was astounded by the power and control he had over the crowd. To look out into the crowd and see all the smiling faces and all the people dancing to the music that this one guy was playing amazed me. I knew from this point that I wanted to be the guy that makes these people move and makes them happy. I had found my calling.
Although it was a few years until I actually was able to pursue my calling, when I did, I knew it was what I was supposed to do.
I started playing music at the age of 19 with a few friends. My original love was chicago and disco house. It was appropriate I thought, since I lived just one hour outside of Chicago. I learned with that and then moved on to play trance as it was what had always moved me. I played trance for a bit while experimenting with other genres and then I came to tribal / progressive house and that was the one. Though I had always liked the beautiful sweeping melodies, big intense breakdowns of trance, and the horns and jazzy flavors of house, I have always had a spot in me waiting for very percussive drums and a deep dark banging bass line to explode. Hence my current style.

I do not like to toot my own horn, so doing a write-up of this sort is quite difficult for me. Then again, that is the purpose of this bio, to let you learn a little about me and where I came from, so here goes.
I have played at numerous parties across Iowa, sometimes being booked two or three times a week. There have been a few times recently where I have had to turn down gigs because I was already booked somewhere else. I have held down a few residencies at Penguins Comedy Club (Cedar Rapids), The Cage (Iowa City), The lift (Des Moines) and Afterdark (Ft Dodge). These are all now defunct. It’s hard to keep a weekly or bi-weekly going in these areas.
I still play club shows and full-scale events on a regular basis, and recently I have been going out of state a lot. I have played in Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, Illinois, and I am hoping it is not going to stop there.

When I play at a party, you can expect me to take the crowd on a little journey if you will. I like to read the crowd and see what they are feeling, if they don’t like what I am playing, I have no problems changing it up a bit. It is my goal to captivate the crowd make sure that the 60 or 90 minutes I am on the decks are one of the best times their evening. I have been told that I have an excellent stage presence.

I just recently have stepped into the realm of producing. Hopefully I will have some original tracks done soon.

My mission is to play and make music for as many people as possible, and to educate people on the beauty of what we have in the music we love so very much. If you have not noticed, it is my passion, and always will be. If I’m not in the music, I don’t feel complete.

Now that you have had the opportunity to learn a little more about me, please listen to my mix if you haven’t already and know that a lot of love and energy was put into making it. I put more than just a record on when I play; I put all my emotion into it. I like to think of it as a reflection of my personality. There is no better feeling than projecting yourself through the beauty of music.

Thank you for reading, and someday soon, I hope to meet you.

Best regards,

Shawn New
