View Full Version : Weak Hi-Hat Samples? Fix em! (beginner tip)

I know I'm not the only one who struggles with shitty hi-hat samples when chopping drums!

Easily enough I just layer them like most people do, but if you never tried this, well then give it a shot..

1) Sometimes I layer two different hi-hat samples, OR just tune the same hi-hat sample 2 different ways, making one tuned down a bit slower.

2) Layer the 2 hi-hats directly on top of each other in sequencing, or use some kind of "play simultaneous" mode depending on what you are using.

3) Then adjust attack/decay on each of them, unless you want it to actually "sound layered".

4) Mess with each of the hi hats volumes, resonance, etc... till you finally got your achieved sound.

BTW, sometimes it's cool to quantize or paste each of the hi hat samples a tiny bit differently for weird effects. I like to make one a bit later with extremely low volume, lower than a barely audible echo, and it can give your track a nice feel.

Are you in a position to post an example of your technique?

I love High Hats....

Thanks

Does this work on snare drums?
