View Full Version : Classic Arp Strings ??

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew whether there was a virtual means of getting that classic Arp strings sound ? I'm not sure which Arp synth the sound came from, but it seems to be all over alot of late seventies music. I guess a classic example of it would be on Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions". It's on alot of Roy Ayers mid-late 70's stuff. Where else, all over the Kay Gees "Kilowatt" album, Anna Mazotti's album, Yana Purim's album, I've heard 4-hero use it, and I'm sure it's on the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now.
I tried the Arp Oddity virtual instrument, but couldn't find a preset that fit. I'm sure it's a bit dated now, but I just love the sound, so I'd be chuffed if anyone can help.
Jasper
PS. Can't afford a vintage synth !! :(

You can get an ARP Solina String Ensemble keyboard real cheep at a lot of used music stores. Nothing beats a Solina. I have an SE-IV model. It just sounds so great! Especially when Gary Wright used it on the "Dream Weaver" album. Electronic Heaven!!! Peace. http://www.vintagesynth.org/arp/string.jpg

i think the GMedia Oddity really is your best bet..... even peeps like Herbie are really impressed by it.....
There are some solina sample-sets and plugins though to be found on the net.. i believe "cheese machine" does some nice strings..

Another option is the Roland RS-202 String keyboard. It's quite old, I picked one up off ebay for cheap just recently. Very nice sound.

I have a soft synth that has a decent sounding arp simulation. Will look at it tonight and let you know. I can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Jasper It's called plugsound, below is a link to the main site and look to the left for a link to the plugsound module.

My highest recommendation, the xylophone sound alone makes this worth it... The arp sounds are pretty good as well.

Hey jsd540,
Many thanks for the information graemlins/beerchug.gif
I'll check it out. I love a good xylophone solo in a track, so this sounds really promising !

Hey O'love,
Many thanks for the link to the VST Plug-in.
I've just downloaded it, and I'll give it a whirl
So cool that people write freeware for musicians
Anyway, again many thanks smile.gif
