I used to sell them. Do you have any cards? It really shines with additional sounds you can get on cards, but they can be hard to come by. Keep a lookout for the 808 and 909 cards, they are really crackin, as are the jazz ones. Also, you might trade up to a MkII as it is supposed to have the expansion card sounds built in plus more pattern memory. The manual is also a must, as with many Roland products.
I really got to like the pads on that thing after a while vs rubber pads. They make for a tight feel when you're playing.

I gonna keep an eye out for those cards. I hear the ethinic percussion card is good. Unfortunatly, I cant afford the $150 that card sell for on ebay, I bought the machine for for that much.
I agree with you on the pads, they have a nice feel.

Had one once, great drum machine. The cards to look out for are the electronic (808) and dance (909) cards.
Some classic sounds and great programmability. Used to love assigning the 808 kick to each of the pads and then altering the pitch on each pad so you could sequence fat basslines on it.

I got a Novation Drum Station(808-909 clone) and have been useing the R-8 to sequence it. I still plan on getting those cards.
