AFRICA HI-FI
presents
GARTH TRINIDAD (Chocolate City KCRW/L.A)
@ sonotheque
FRIDAY AUGUST 20
9pm-2am
AFRICA HI-FI is the brainchild of Sonia Hassan and co-creator, World Renown DJ/Producer/Remixer Ron Trent. This monthly event will be a musical tribute of respect to Africa and all that it has touched and influenced in World music and culture. AFRICA HI-FI will fuse music and social consciousness with art and dance. The evening will be geared toward educating people about Africa as the birthplace of music that we all listen to and love, whether it be Rock, Pop, Dance or Hip Hop. Africa HI-FI is being presented as an open forum that will tap into the creative energy of the Motherland to help elevate the consciousness of all people, thereby creating a positive collective community.
AFRICA HI-FI is taking place at sonotheque every 3rd FRIDAY of each month with RON TRENT as your Resident Dee-Jay and SONIA H. as your Host. This month, FRIDAY AUGUST 20, we are excited to have as our guest, our companion in spreading consciousness and true music, GARTH TRINIDAD from L.A.
GARTH TRINIDAD is the premiere curator of the urban alternative. For 8 years he’s shared a most unique of black musical visions with his phenomenal music program, “Chocolate City” on 89.9fm KCRW in Los Angeles. While breaking artists such as Jill Scott, Kelis, Van Hunt, Saul Williams, King Britt, Antibalas, he’s nurtured a cross section of non mainstream music movements—afrobeat, hip hop, progressive dance and world rhythms—that has served as a unifying force for LA while building a global following thanks to KCRW’s growing internet audience [ www.kcrw.com (http://www.kcrw.com) ]. Awards and accolades from press and peers have followed since the inception of his radio program and various live achievements, including an award winning series of live hip hop shows in 1999 that featured Gangstarr, Bahamadia, Speech, Black Eyed Peas, to celebrate the coming millennium; the first public performance of Jill Scott in LA, 2000; a stunning free concert on the sprawling courtyards of The Getty Center that brought together 6000 Angelinos to celebrate diversity and appreciation of art and music in the sultry summer of 2002. As a programmer and budding music supervisor, his talents have been employed by the likes of Nike, FX Network, MVP Films, PBS, Mitsubishi, Infiniti, and United Airlines. Garth has been called upon by Toyota, Ford, Nike, Etnies, K-Swiss, Puma, to accept sponsorship, drive cars, wear clothing, and host events for their continual efforts to nurture street credibility. Along with DJ partner Mr French, he’s just formed a production company called Metisse, for the sole purpose of ushering in healthy music options via music production and mainstream media—focused on live, radio, and online presence. Continually looking for the perfect beat, Garth spins records at various parties coast to coast, abroad, and around town. With little more than word of mouth promotion, hundreds flock to his Los Angeles residencies—Saturdays for Metisse at The Little Temple in Silverlake, Sundays for Oneway at Zanzibar in Santa Monica, and on special occasions at Nike’s Blu House on Venice Beach. Plans in 2004 include a few long overdue projects—website, mix cd series; also, music supervisor credit on the Mario Van Peeble’s film “Baadassss!”, set for international release in summer 2004 through Sony, along with the production credit on the film’s soundtrack, to follow on BBE records.
OPENING THE NIGHT WITH HIS RARE SELECTIONS OF AFRICAN-BASED RHYTHMS, IS SONOTHEQUE OWNER/DJ JOE BRYL, WHO HAS HELPED MAKE THIS NIGHT POSSIBLE.
