Why is it that at some shows i've gone to, the opening DJ (act) goes out there and does his thing but when the main DJ plays....the sound gets louder or crisper.
There are some shows that sound loud all the way through.

Do sound men crank up the volume or holdback sound for the main attraction or is it my buzz just kickin in?

I think that happens. I also think some DJs blast the music to overcompensate for lack of good music choices. http://deephousepage.com/smilies/scratchchin.gif

They also love to turn the DJ WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down in-between sets of bands. Drives me nuts. Then again, they are hoping people got to the bar and spend money, so what are you gonna do...

actually, from a sound man point of view, a lot of opening jocks tend to pound the system to death for like 5 people. A lot of the time, its raised gradually as the place fills up. Volume 3/4 up is a bit much for a small crowd. Its better to keep some headroom for when the place is full then just bang it from the get and annoy the few people there with volume.

Good point regarding the volume, and understandable too. We've heard the sound quality "magically improve" on occasion here (seemingly at the flip of a switch), volume notwithstanding.......JMJ ;)

How about when you come on after the "star" and suddenly the monitors don't work any more & the sound tech has dissapeared.

I've had this happen to me.
