NEW YORK POST
FINEST PREP FOR ANARCHY
http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/28933.htm

By MURRAY WEISS and ANDY SOLTIS
August 16, 2004 -- Cops are bracing for radical attempts to "shut down" the Republican convention, with protesters blockading or disabling delegates' buses * and the NYPD is even warning McDonald's and Starbucks that they could be anarchist targets.
The radicals and other activists * who've sparked stormy protests from Seattle to Genoa * will be meeting here Friday in a war council to plan protests for the convention.
The radicals claim protests for the four-day event beginning Aug. 30 will be peaceful * and the only threat of violence stems from cops.
But sources said the NYPD is anticipating efforts by radicals to:
* Stop delegates from getting to Madison Square Garden, the convention site, by puncturing the tires of their shuttle buses or lying down in front of them.
* Disrupt subways, especially near the Garden.
* Create chaos at the 40 hotels housing delegates.
Sources said the NYPD is setting up a system to protect the shuttle buses and is taking other measures such as developing alternate routes from delegates' hotels.
Police yesterday also said they will be sending community-affairs officers to large corporate outlets in the vicinity of the Garden * such as McDonald's and Starbucks * to advise them they could be targets.
Several high-profile members of the radical protest movement will meet Friday at a "Life After Capitalism" conference at Hunter College to discuss a final strategy.
Among them are Canadian activist Jaggi Singh; Lisa Fithian of Los Angeles, a top organizer in the umbrella group United for Peace and Justice; and Miriam "Starhawk" Simos of San Francisco, author of a widely read essay, "How We Shut Down the WTO."
"We're not calling for a shutdown of the convention," Fithian said.
"No one has an intention of being arrested. If the police exercise restraint. . . they have nothing to fear."
But she said there may be people who want to "go beyond marching."
The NYPD is ready.
"We expect the vast majority of demonstrators to be law-abiding," said spokesman Paul Browne. "But we're prepared for those who are not."

10 Things New Yorkers AND EVERYONE ELSE
Can Do to Say NO to the Bush Agenda
Before During and after the RNC

1. PUT A SIGN OR FLAG IN YOUR WINDOW. Wouldn't it be great to greet
the Republican delegates as they arrive in New York City with messages
against the Bush Agenda in the windows of buildings all around town?
Make your own sign, download one from the NoRNC Poster Collective
(http://www.norncposters.org/) or pick up a beautiful sign or flag that
says "We the people say NO to the Bush agenda" from the United for
Peace and Justice office at 209 W. 38th Street, 9th Floor (requested
donation: $1/poster, $6/flag). You can also purchase these items
through the UFPJ website at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/merchandise

2. WEAR A BUTTON OR T-SHIRT THAT EXPRESSES YOUR OPPOSITION TO THE BUSH
AGENDA. Why be a human billboard for Nike or the GAP when you can be a
human billboard for peace and justice? You can make your own t-shirt
by writing a slogan on your shirt using markers or paint. Or you can
buy buttons or t-shirts at the UFPJ office or from our website,
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/merchandise . Other sources for t-shirts
and buttons are: CODEPINK: http://codepink.kintera.org/store; American
Friends Service Committee: http://www.afsc.org/resources/objects.htm

3. MARCH WITH US ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 29. Assemble at 10:00 AM at 14th
Street & Seventh Avenue; march begins at noon. There are two key
moments this year when people throughout the United States will have
the opportunity to send a resounding message of opposition to the Bush
Agenda: November 2, election day, and August 29 in New York City. As
the eyes of the world are upon us during the Republican National
Convention - not to mention the eyes of thousands of journalists who
will be covering the convention - we have an amazing opportunity to
send a message about the devastation that the Bush agenda has caused
the people of the world and our environment. This is going to be a
historic occasion, not to be missed. For more information about this
historic, peaceful, legal, permitted march, see
http://www.unitedforpeace.org

4. HELP TURN OUT OTHERS FOR THE AUGUST 29 MARCH. Whether you are able
to march on August 29 or not, you can do very important work to make
sure the largest and most diverse crowd possible takes to the streets
on the eve of the Republican National Convention. Email information
about the march to all of your friends, family members, and co-workers
with a personal note telling them why you think it's important to
march. Download flyers from our website,
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/leaflets and hand them out in your
neighborhood, at work, at the bus stop, and everywhere else you happen
to spend time in and around New York City. We welcome families, young
people, elderly people, veterans, artists, immigrants, business
people, and people from all walks of life to join us in the streets on
August 29. And we need your help to do it!

5. CHECK OUT THE DOZENS OF OTHER WONDERFUL EVENTS THAT ARE PLANNED
DURING THE RNC. The array of events that have been planned to
"welcome" the Republicans to New York City is truly amazing. From the
Imagine Festival of arts and culture to a day of nonviolent direct
action; from a peace march from Long Island to NYC to a Women Against
War concert at the Riverside Church; from the Still We Rise march and
rally to a Books Not Bombs youth convergence to a symbolic
unemployment line -- there are hundreds of events planned before,
during and after the Republican National Convention. They need your
participation. For details, see
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=2504. Other great
websites are http://www.counterconvention.org/ and
http://www.rncnotwelcome.org/.

6. DON'T RENT YOUR APARTMENT TO THE REPUBLICANS. Sure, it's tempting
to list your apartment on Craig's List and get lots of money when you
rent it to corporate executives or lobbyists who want to be in New
York for the Republican National Convention. But these are the people
who go to war for profit, roll back our environmental regulations, and
gag health workers who want to tell women about their right to choose.
Don't do it! Instead .

7. DO OFFER HOUSING TO OUT-OF-TOWN ACTIVISTS WHO WANT TO PROTEST
DURING THE RNC. Activists are just regular people like you and me.
They are teachers, nurses, carpenters, nonprofit workers, students,
unemployed people, and others who realize how important it is to make
a statement about our government's policies during the Republican
National Convention. Unlike most of the Republican delegates, they
can't afford fancy hotels, and they need our help. If you have an
extra couch or room or even space on the floor, please help out one of
the activists from California, Texas, Florida and elsewhere who want
to be here during the RNC. List your offer of free housing on the
housing board at http://www.counterconvention.org/

8. STAY IN NEW YORK FOR THE RNC PROTEST EVENTS. The Bush and Bloomberg
administrations are doing everything they can to push down the numbers
of people who turn out to protest during the RNC. They are whipping up
fears of everything from chaos in the streets to traffic jams to
terrorist attacks. We can't let them succeed in scaring people out of
exercising our First Amendment right to dissent. Not to mention that
we have got to once and for all, as New Yorkers, tell the Republicans
that they must stop using the Sept. 11 attacks to rationalize their
aggressive and militaristic policies.

9. MAKE A DONATION TO THE GROUPS THAT ARE ORGANIZING EVENTS. On a
shoe-string budget, United for Peace and Justice has been able to
bring hundreds of thousands of people out onto the streets of New York
time and time again. We helped the world say no to the Iraq war on
February 15, 2003 and no to the occupation of Iraq on the one-year
anniversary of the war. We've fought for the right to march in New
York City, and now we're having to fight with Bloomberg and the NYPD
for a reasonable rally location for the August 29 protest. We
seriously need your financial support in order to be able to do this
important work. To make a donation online, go to
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/donate

10. CIRCULATE THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. There's nothing wrong
with a little spam for a good cause. We need to reach beyond the
choir. Please send this email to everyone you've ever met. Post in on
every appropriate listserv. We're counting on you! HELP US REACH
EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO SAY NO TO THE BUSH AGENDA.
