    Music reads

What are your read and recommended books about or featuring music themes?

    Some of my favourites:

To me the quintessential DJ book. LastNightADJSML will give you the history, but this will really tell you of the emotions, loves and sorrows.

These two are the only conscise books on Congolese rumba, lingala and soukouss music in existence. They are vital records of an era bygone, places lost, and a music scattered across the globe through need, greed and war.

    Thumbs down I know

just been browsing and came across www.watchec.net there prices seem to be way lower that standard. All of the wristwatches seem to be priced around $300 to $400. Are they fakes? The site seems to look quite legit.

not necessarily great literary achievements, but fun reads nonetheless... I think the miles one stands out.

It feels like you get a peek into the mind of a true self aware and tortured genius

I used to think the Mingus one was great. But really, he was a bit of an arsehole, wasn't he?

Pretty much. Same with Miles though - not the most nuanced guy.
I think that it partly what made the books fascinating to me when I first read them. You don't expect sensitive musicians to be so "raw" (unlike dozens of stale rags-to-riches type Bios that float around -- I read the quincy jones bio a while back...zzzzzzzzzzz)

anything by daniel j. levitin. his work on cognitive neuroscience as it pertains to music perception and enjoyment is outstanding and he writes in a way anyone can understand and appreciate; both from a musician and appreciator's perspectives.

highly recommend 'this is your brain on music' and 'the world in six songs'.

Kodwon Eshun, "More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction"

its a pretty intense discussion of "afro-futurism" in artists ranging from p-funk, sun ra, massive attack, underground resistance and detroit techno, dr. octagon.

if you are into music, postmodernism and the politics of race, than this is for you, his prose is pretty dense, but fun.
