    Can anybody explain this as it relates to playing style?

    Gospel/Spiritual music is where "church chords" comes from. Explaining it quickly is kind of impossible as it refers to harmonic movement. But the overall "Sound" of the style refers to common chord progressions (also chord types and inversions) that you may hear often in "church music".

    You can listen to gospel music and hear how "church chords" have their own identity in the music. If you listen to r&b, you can hear church chords' influence since many r&b producer and singers are from the church anyway, including myself.
