Cops Taser student who questioned John Kerry

Sparks flew during a townhall meeting that Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., held yesterday at the University of Florida. Journalism student Andrew Meyer interrupted the speech, prompting police to drag him away from the microphone and shoot him with a Taser gun.

"He apparently asked several questions — he went on for quite awhile — then he was asked to stop," university spokesman Steve Orlando tells the Associated Press. "He had used his allotted time. His microphone was cut off, then he became upset."

WTVJ-TV sums up its video in one sentence: "Andrew Meyer, a UF student from Weston, is tasered and taken away by police after asking John Kerry a question during a speech."

There's a video on YouTube, too. The best quality footage is from The Gainesville Sun.

AP says Meyer was charged with resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. He is being held at the local jail.

Update at 9:55 a.m. ET: Thanks to bopdieuropa85 for pointing out in the comments section that the event was in the afternoon, not the evening.

The Independent Florida Alligator identifies Meyer as a senior who is majoring in telecommunication and says he used to work as one of the student newspaper's columnists. (A selection of his writings for the paper. Some more material.)

Here's an excerpt from the paper's editorial about the incident: "UPD's actions are inexcusable and out of line. It owes an apology not just to Andrew Meyer, but also to all of UF. We must be able to trust those who are supposed to protect us. We should not have to fear them."

Meyer's fellow students have created a Facebook group devoted to this incident. It's called "John Kerry conference at UF! A fiasco!!! Needs to be known!" They plan to stage a protest later today.

Although dude wouldn't STFU, that tazering was definitely uncalled for. They could have just dragged his ass outside.

holy shit, that guys in the same college i was. see, that's how we telecom majors roll... seriously though, the uf campus police are no joke. always some really big mean dudes that will get rough very quickly. plus everyone's fired up after the big football weekend so, it's probably a bit hot down in the g-spot these days! honestly, i hope this blows up big. even if it's a black eye for the school...

A bit suprised everyone is just watching, even though they probably wanted him to stfu. The actions of the security could have started a riot.

Late last week Friday, I was running down the local bodega for a beer and some smokes. There was no one in the store and not much to leash my dog to save the fruit stand, side the entrance to store.

Aside from my dog being extremely well behaved (I wouldn’t even need to leash him outside, he’d stay there an wait for me, it’s just to protect him everyone’s FUCKING PIT BULLS, not only the dog of choice amongst thugs and Gs but yuppies now too), I was running in for two seconds, grab beer and smokes, no other customers, out.

Cosmo being tied to the fruit stand still left a good 4 feat at least, to enter the store without being in any contact of my dog.

I get to the register and while I’m paying I see a cop about to enter (black West Indian) and in utter disdain YELLS –Who’s dog is this out here blocking the entrance? I look up seeing him with plenty of room, about to get my cash but he won’t shut up or come in, so I run to door saying –He’s fine, you can come, in he wont bother you. --Come get this dog out the entrance! He yells. I go up to him and as to almost usher him kindly in remind him ---See, you got at least 4 feet here? What’s the problem? --I’m not coming in with that dog there, he’s dangerous. So I move Cosmo, he’s still bitching, so finally I tell him straight…

--What are you on about my dog being dangerous? You’re the only one around here I see with a gun and the law on your side to use it. That makes you the only one dangerous around here. That is a gun on your side right?

His response, he could shoot my dog if he attacked him so if I don't want that to happen, keep him out his way. Proving my case he was huh?

    --Figures, I said.

I guess they are going to start screening the questions the students ask on college campuses now...

And what use is it to question when the answers are neat little sound-bites tailor made for consumption on CNN and Fox...

What amazes me is that this happens in a university environment with hundreds of people of homogenic educational, social and (probably) political background, including a keynote speaker and leadership figurehead coming from that same background, engaging in free, democratic discourse......

......where these six rubes in uniform are outclassed and outnumbered in all distinctions bar their weapons......

    ......and nobody does anything!

The most shocking bit is that Kerry could and should have taken command of the situation immediately. He should have taken up leadership. Instead he just waited that situation out.

If this had happened at my university in Germany, we would have torn the place apart. We would have set the town on fire. They would have had to come back in division strength.

If this had happened at my university in Nairobi, those cops would have been lynched on the spot.

I can't believe that a room full of the future political, economic and social elite just sits there and does NOTHING.

That just goes to show the how many Americans have become sheeple. When I was at University of Illinois in the early 90's, we'd have burned the place down too. We were waiting for something to protest about. Nowadays, that protest spirit is gone.

BTW, the question the guy was asking was whether Kerry was a Skull and Bonesmen like George Bush, which he is. So no matter if Kerry or Bush was elected, Skull and Bones still wins. Funny how Kerry never took control of the situtation to answer that question.
