Does anyone here recycle their cooking oil?

May sound like a silly question, but a friend and I have been making various dishes over the past year (it gives me a chance to learn how to cook). I was surprised when she pulled out this old tin can with holes on top in order to reuse the corn oil held within. Essentially, after cooking a meal she takes the used oil and drains it through the little holes on top which then collects in the tin can. When it is time to do another meal they just reuse the old oil for the new dish. It is not thrown out until the oil gets "cloudy."

Seems her family has been doing this for years due to the fact, while growing up, it was too expensive for them to purchase new oil for every meal. Does anyone else do this or know anyone who does this? Just curious ...

The can of used oil\lard on top of the stove is not an unique experience.....Foods fry the best (to me, anyway) after the 4th-5th use......growing up po', grocery shopping was a once a month thing, so you had to stretch it out.....

We have a fryer that has a basket and a hinged lid. I cook stuff in there a few times before I change it. It depends on what I cook in there. You can cook french fries in there quite a few times if it's the only thing you cook. But if I cook something like chicken fried steak or other breaded things, it gets nasty quick. I mostly go by smell to tell when I want to change the oil.

If the oil is not burnt you can reuse it till it breaks down just remember the oil will take on the flavors of the food its fried in.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother had a 'Grease Can' on the stove. I literally said "Grease"

under the lid, there was a little strainer for the pork chop, fish, fried chicken particles.

We hardly ever fry chicken, fish, etc in my household, but we do fry a helluva lot of plaintain (at least once a week) so yes, we do have an old coffee can of grease on the stove.

That's right, I got a grease can (ain't no shame in my game)

    LOL!!!

yeah, sometimes fried food does taste better in used oil, depending on what was cooked in it before, the seasonings used in it, etc. in my household, fried fish grease was always separated from the others though.

If you're having to recycle oil for frying...you're eating too much fried food.

lol @ this thread but to answer the question, i wouldn't do it. hot oil creates transfats and produces toxins when oxidized. (carcinogens) every time you use it you lower the smoke point. chuck it. max 1 time if necessary. better to use peanut oil or coconut oil, not corn, safflower, or canola oil when reusing. they are more stable oils.
