Scammers have some nerve these days...

Just got a phone call from a private number:

Woman: Hello - is this Mr Williams?
    Me: Yes it is
Woman: I am calling to inform you that your checking account info is in a public system where it should not be. I am calling to get it removed from the public system for you. I need for you to get your checkbook - I will wait.
    Me:*click*

Then I do a little search online and find this (from 2005):

    Beware phone scam

    ...and this from last year:

    2006 version

I should have asked "If my info is already out there, why do you need it again from me?"

    Be careful peeps...

my reply would be "I'm busy right now. Give me your name and number (no 800 #'s) and I'll call you back later". They'll hang up with a quickness

I got an email that was supposedly from the IRS saying that I was getting additional money back. This was like a month ago. I know something was up when the email address was a bunch of numbers@ irs.gov.

This is how I deal with almost all calls not coming from people I know.

I just got a call from someone claiming to work for Comcast... I haven't paid my cable bill and my cable was shut off about 2weeks ago... The person was calling from a cellphone and wanted to know if I was planning on having my cable turned back on, if so they were willing to come by my home and pick up a check to have it restored by tomorrow... Sounds like a scam to me.

Just called Comcast and they verified that they have people driving around collecting payments... This is not only dumb, but dangerous for both parties... I can see the driver and the customer being robbed or even worse.

Why do you think they have so many commercials on? You advertise when you need to drum up more business. I see they also go out of their way to get their customers back any way they can.

I thought about that... Tomorrow I am going to call them back and tell them that I am considering getting DirecTV and see how bad they want to keep me as a customer...

If you haven't paid your bill and had your cable shut off two weeks ago, I'm guessing the answer's going to be "Not very".

We'll see.... If they are willing to send someone to my home at 8pm to pickup a check to turn back on my service, I am sure they are willing to offer some type of discount or free service to keep me an subscriber...

Yeah. I just got one from Wachovia! Never had, nor do I want an account there either! Some less enlightened folks, like very young or old people, may think they've hit the jackpot. They could end up in a very bad state.

Any scam against a person is horrible but I did chuckle a little at this one cause I know some of these guys got so much money they didnt even think twice about paying for a mag they get free.

November 29, 2007 -- Residents on the North Shore are being warned about a magazine subscription scam.

The North Shore Magazine is a free publication and goes to residents who request delivery. This week, several residents says they have received "renewal notices" in the mail.. They ask for payment for the subscriptions. The publisher of the magazines says residents should not pay.

    What the HELL???

Just got another call about 5 minutes ago...

Woman (strong foreign accent): Hello - I am trying to reach Mr. Williams?
    Me: This is he
Woman: I am calling from the Social Security Administration. I am happy to inform you that you will be receiving $500 a month from the US government for the next 12 months. The reason for this is because your name is in our database as a regular taxpayer and one of the country's best citizens (**are you freaking KIDDING ME??? They couldn't come up with anything better than that?). This is not a loan - rather it is a refund on what you have already paid in taxes, so nothing will need to be paid back. We will deposit it directly into your account...
    Me: *click*

I was actually insulted by this one because of how obvious it was - and she was reading directly from a script...badly...

Haven't found this one via the net yet, but will post a link when I do.

*Edit - BTW, the number that pops up on my caller ID is 12011
