    Were or are these prevalant(sp) in the States.

    They had a huge impact in the uk yrs ago

    Still do to a certain extent

    I worked in one for about a year in the late 90's.

    I did one show per a week.

    Never said a word (except announce the call letters every 30 mins.)....just music.

    There is at least one in NYC right now. They play mostly Carribean music from what I understand.

    My friend and I had a pirate radio station in Brooklyn whehn I was at college in the late 80s. We even convinced our school to buy us a transmitter ($10K). It lasted about 8 months then the FCC sent the school a letter saying they had been parked in a van outide of the dorm for 4 months, recording every single show and logging every single infraction. We were basically given a cease and desist order or face over 100K in fines, etc. That was the end of that. It was fun while it lasted.
