    Status on use of vinyl

    Hi everyone,

It's been years since I've visited this site and seen this topic discussed. Is vinyl dead yet?

If your tables were a few thousand miles away would you invest in shipping them? Is vinyl still widely available for most releases?

I'm so sorry to see that dancetracks.com closed.

If you dig vinyl & like DJing with it, my suggestion would be to keep it that way & stop worrying about stats & what the other Joe is or is'nt doing

I played a restaurant gig two weeks ago and the 25 year old dj I was sharing the decks with had a 140 gig harddrive "copy" of a famous NY dj's WAV filled hard drive. All the classics were on there. Now my vinyl collection rivalled this but it took me 25 years to build it. This dj was a super nice guy and all, but the point is he was able to obtain an incredible collection at a relatively young age, without digging, spending, paying shipping etc. The game has changed - if you are just starting out, I can't see how you would find value going the vinyl route.

Now, as an all-vinyl dj myself, I would say there is definitely intrinsic value in having the physical records, but a downpayment-on-a-house worth of intrinsic value (what the records on that hard drive would cost you)? I don't know. The game has definitely changed.

Was this kid an apprentice or a close family friend?

I still balance my purchases of new stuff 50/50 for vinyl and digital. Can't shake the vinyl habit whatsoever and pulling out a teddy pendergrass record from your shelf and putting it on STILL gets you laid much easier than whipping up the cold harsh itunes...

The young guy points to the hard drive and says "Do you know what this is?" I say, "An interface box?" He says, "No, it's a 140 gig copy of ~so and so's~ hard drive. It's got everything on it." I say, "So its a 140 gig collection of MP3s?" He says, "No, WAVs." I ask how he got it and he tells me he has done some studio work somewhere and was able to get it. I don't ask any more questions. Later, he had me try his Serato setup and the folders were full of NY classics that I knew better than this young guy. We do a classics set at this restaurant and trade numbers for a future gig. The funny thing was, when I did a set from my vinyl crate, he was losing it over some of the records I was playing and said, "We gotta get together and digitize some of your stuff." I DON'T THINK SO!

No vinyl is not dead. It's just that its alot easier to take one book of cds compared to six or seven crates of records which that one book contains. I miss playing with vinyl. The ol' back ain't what it used to be

    hey everyone

brought my tables to europe successfully. now they're sitting in their coffins waiting to get played but i'm unsure about the electricty part of it cause the voltage is different.

maybe someone out there bought off ebay? if anyone has advice i'd appreciate it.
