An art critic, writing in an American magazine, has likened Walsall in the British Midlands to "Ceaucescu's Romania with fast food outlets."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/1102254.stm

The critic, Theodore Dalrymple, writes that there is nowhere in the world where it is possible to travel such long distances without seeing anything grateful to the eye.

Councillors reacted with fury, saying his criticisms were totally unwarranted. Walsall hit the headlines last year when a local resident launched an "Ugly Walsall" website.

Mr Dalrymple said that it was possible that there were uglier towns in the world, but he didn't know them. Do you? Which place do you think deserves the title?

That's rough mate, I would have personally said, Huddersfield, nothing like coming into Huddesfield on the train with smog clinging to the valley from the council incinerator..

The worst place I can remember was a small town in New York State called Watertown - I remember driving through this town and thought it was like one of those shanti towns you'd see on the BBC.

This was NY State in 1985 and people were using polyurethane as roofing on their houses & building shacks on empty lots - scary!

Sorry to any heads from Huddersfield or Watertown, NY.

There's tons of desolate, piss ridden old mining towns in Fife. I dunno if my antipathy's purely motivated by drives back from Glasgow visiting my gran, asking if we're nearly home and invariably hearing "we're just into Auchtermuchty", or Windygates. I can't remember if they're all that bad but Methil definitely sucks.

My little brother lives in Portsmouth. There was that great gag where Geoff Hoon had compared Umm Qasr to Southampton and some squaddie quipped, "It's nothing like Southampton: there's no beer, no prostitutes and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth".

Come to the 'Texas of Flanders', the industrialized area some 30km southwest of Ghent, now THAT'S ugly, with the village of Oostrozebeke a serious contender for the #1 ugliest town in the world.
