Book Recommendation: 'Persian Fire', Tom Holland

For the history buff, 'Persian Fire' details the conquests of the Persian Army up to their defeat at the hands of the Greek unified army (before the rule of Alexander the Great).

One of the things that I found interesting is the way the Persian kings Darius as well as his son Xerxes would consider the religious/spiritual beliefs of the people they conquered. In short, they would announce to that society that their deity/god they worshipped appointed them to rule; in many cases as a result of that declaration, they received a rather warm reception from their new slaves.

Tom Holland also wrote 'Rubicon', which details the Roman Empire. I have not read this book yet.
