Much better amenities. Even in coach. Plus, the last time I was on Air France, they still had a smoking section.

    Doug, you are so old.......(-:

I think they are much closer now in service. Air France is a big player with its purchase of KLM. The food on AF is the best coach food cross-Atlantic BY FAR.

5 years ago, I would have said Virgin, hands down.

These days, however, there isn't much difference between them. Now that everybody has decent IFE systems, the experience is about the same. I was on AF last April, and it was fine. Virgin seems to be less impressive every time I fly. Except... their Upper Class is amazing.

IFE = In-flight Entertainment (movies in the back of the seat in front of you). Virgin used to be light years ahead of the rest... not so much anymore (their games suck.)

UK to Ireland is easy. Check Ryan Air and easyJet for cheap flights. Why, pray tell, are you going to Ireland, though?

Nothing wrong with Ryan Air as such, from what I can tell from experience (one round trip to Murcia). They were fast, efficient and 20 minutes ahead of schedule both legs. New aircraft. Czech pornstar FA's. The only thing that can be inconvenient is that they frequent out of the way boonie airports with low landing fees (Frankfurt-Hahn-Int'l is actually 120 kilometres from Frankie). So sometimes the transferring can be a bit bothersome.

Anything longer than 2.30 hours is probably pushing it.

I've done EasyJet to Barcelona from LHR many, many times and it's OK. I think if I was in the air for three hours with them or RyanAir that would be pushing it.

last time i flew virgin, they had user-controlled televisions at every seat in coach. and, this was back in 2001. you could even play video games using a controller at your armchair. i was rockin' out some super mario brothers all the way to south africa.

Ryan Air and Easy Jet are only cheap if you travel light. They have strict baggage rules and charge heavy on overages.

No seat assignments - jump on and fight for a seat like the bus. Easy Jet has the most unhappy tired cranky ass flight attendants i've ever seen, and the ugliest uniforms.

I haven't done cross atlantic on Air France yet, but I've done Virgin and BA many times. Virgin is a crap shoot, even though all their Inter continental flights have great entertainment setups, about half their airlines have shit for legroom, you never know what you'll get. I've had a few stiff seated trips with them. To me it's all about leg room, I can bring a book and skip reruns of Doogie

What's amazing is the last couple International Continental flights I was on had the best inflight entertainment system I've ever seen, hundreds of television shows and hundreds of movies. Used to be they were old school, one bad movie on a television in the ceiling, even international.

but then.. drawback with them is no free booze

i don't really care about how crappy a plane is for a 2 hour flight. i'm never sober when i'm in europe anyway.. and definitely not a plane.

By the time you've actually made it through all of the sometimes huge lines, multiple security checks,
endless irritating personal questions by security agents trying to trip you, and carry-on luggage
hassles and restrictions at Heathrow or most major European airports on the way back to the US,
(but the UK being worst at this time) it really may not matter much at all anymore which company's
    cabin you even fly in.

The great equalizer..... Security measures and checks.

like i said, ryan air is a cattle coach...mostly eastern european staff that are underpaid, overworked and abused...and yes, serious baggage charges...
