Working in the USA student stylee...

thinking about working over there next summer after I finish uni... I know there are loads of programs online etc... but does anyone have any experience in this from perhaps an employer's point of view? the jobs aren't exactly that technical i know, but i think the experience would do me good...

anyone got any advice for coming over? might as well research it now in time for next year...

I am not up on student visas but my wife came over on a J1 visa.

My advice is, whatever the immigration rules, follow them to the letter. For example, if the visa lets you work for a particular company, and only that company...then don't take a night jop bartending. Shit like that can prevent you from geting you next visa.

I worked in Newark and Rural New Jersey at Camps and schools 3 summers in a row on J1 student Visas. Its fairly easy to get work and this type visa Chris, shouldnt be a problem. The people I worked for are here www.kidscorporation.org. Id be happy to tell you more and put you in contact with the director if you wish. Money isnt great, but valuable experience and great for the CV.

cheers guys.... would really like to find an engineering job that will benefit my career but i know how hard that will be -especially for only 3/4 months as well...

i know the pay won't be that good but just want the experience to see if i like living in the USA...

Hey, sounds like you are going for a professional job which brings up more visa.

With SOME J1 visa, there is a requirement that you return to your home country for two years after you J1 expires. This does not apply to all J1. If you want to live in the US after your J1 expires (for example get a H1B work visa or a Green Card) you cannot do it for 2 years if your visa has this 'two year requirement.'

This is mostly for training (for example) doctors from developing countries,to ensure that they do no get their training and then stay in the US.
