Firefighters battled blaze at government building in Chicago

October 17, 2003 Firefighters battled a blaze at the Cook County Administration Building on Washington Street between Clark and State Street in Chicago.
Smoke and flames were pouring out of several windows of the building-- mainly on the east side. The fire started at about 4:15 p.m. It affected the 10th, 11th and 12th floors. Windows were broken to vent out the building.

People escaped the fire through stairwells that were filled with thick black smoke. One person was reportedly injured in the blaze. That person was escorted out of the building, but their condition is unknown.

About three people were treated in the lobby of the building.

There is a daycare on the first two floors of this building, but it had closed before the fire broke out.

Everyone is reportedly out of the building now.

ABC7Chicago.com will have more on this story as it becomes available.

I worked in this building for about 10 years before my old company sold it and the city picked it up. We had employee 'floor marshalls' and two fire drills a year. There's two centrally located fire escape stairwells in the building, easy as hell to find...when we had it. Kind of hard to see how anybody died in there. Dumb ass city agencies prolly never held fire drills. I dont care where ya are, always know the way out in case of fire.

Exactly. They also reported the building was not mandated to have those sprinklers. The way the smoke poured out the windows kinda reminded me of 9/11. Not nearly as bad but still..

My brother, works in that building, he tells me that they have fire drills often. Now I hear thru FOX news that there are six confirmed dead and many more hospitalized. They say that alot of the fire escapes were locked and people were forced to go back up. I don't understand, if the fire was basically in the northeast side of the building, how come they couldn't escape on the other side of the building?

I just heard that too! That's awful. I forgot that back in the early 90's, I had to go to Arthur Andersen in that building quite often. I was working at a catering svc and we would cater their lunches. We'd have to use these treacherous freight elevators and that building was a trip.

I work in that building now at the Board of Elections on the 8th floor. I was just leaving at 5pm yesterday and walking towards the brown line on wells and i heard the fire trucks and figured they were going somewhere else. It wasn't until i was on the train that i started receiving calls from my sister and a bunch of other people to see if i was ok. I'm still wondering if anybody from our office was still in there.
