Does Race Matter In '08? The View From York, Pa. (npr)

anybody listen to this yesterday?.....michele norris is going around the country interviewing folks about race and politrix...her first stop was york, pa...

:: read the article and listen to the episode ::

i know nothing about york, outside of it being a stop in the underground railroad....who'da thunk that race issues would run so deep there?....here's a nice quote from an elderly white lady who swears she grew up unaware of prejudice:
Leah Moreland, the woman who said she grew up sheltered from prejudice, plans to vote for McCain. Party loyalty is also part of her decision. But her cultural compass also comes into play. She says her gut tells her not to trust Obama.

"I look at Obama, and I have a question in my mind," she says. "Years ago, was he taken into the Muslim faith? And my concern is the only way you are no longer a Muslim is if you are dead, killed. So in my mind, he's still alive."

Although Barack Obama has said repeatedly he is not a Muslim and has never been a Muslim, Moreland is still unconvinced.

"There is something about him I don't trust," she says. "I don't care how good a speaker he is, I just can't trust him."
...growing up in texas, i always took the opportunity to engage people like leah moreland in conversations about race, politrix, the economy, etc with the goal of trying to insert some logic and facts into the discourse...it was fun...who could turn down a chance to holler at a black dude with locks wearing a "butthole surfer" t-shirt and docs?...

sadly, i don't have the patience to talk to folks like her anymore...do you?...if any of ya'll are in the york, pa area -- do me a favor and kick leah moreland in her bad hip for me on or just before nov 4....appreciate it...

    peace,

I listened to most of it on National Public Radio yesterday. It was pretty interesting, yet not surprising. I also tripped out when the lady questioned Baraks' religious affiliation, even though he has repeatedly denied being a Muslim (as though being Muslim automaticly makes you a terrorist or terrorist simpathizer). I think that was just a convenient excuse as to why she would not vote for Barak. She's misguided, but that is her right.
