I've been thinking alot on this subject lately..having various conversations on the subject with those who spin and those who don't and I read an article that David Morales did and he said what differentiated him from other dj's is he plays alot of his own music....

I plan to be one of the great ones.....

Faire One and I talk about this all the time ( top 30 )....if you want to be great you have to be different.....

Going to Gramaphone and buying the latest and newest ain't gonna cut it... to many guys playing the same stuff...IMO.

Take something that ain't " house " and make it house....I'll elaborate on that in a set/cd to come !

Be an individual ! we all talent ... most of us can blend....some of us even program logically....but what seperates you from the great ones ?

any thoughts ?

my personal thoughts.....

you say you wanna be great one, but do you really know what you are asking for? i bet most of us couldn't handle all that comes with it........

addition - or willing to give up what it takes to get to that level (including myself).

musically, definitely having a lot of exclusive/unreleased music will help i.e., david morales, knuckles, krivit, ect.

i saw a playlist from krivit on one of the websites and 70% of the songs were labled (advance).

Greetings DJ George Bates:

I wish you nothing but blue skies ...and that all of your musical dreams will come true.

At the same time kept in mind, that being on a pedstal is a very uncomfortable position.

The fact that I am not great, nor good really, but that I still do it for the love of the music.

the real question (not to hijack) is this. does greatness = level of recognition.

i've heard some "great" dj's who are virtually unknown. does having a big name make you great?

The right attitude, dedication, modesty, hours of practice, an uncanny ability to pick out the great tunes from the mediocre, or turn the mediocre into great tunes, to build you up and put you down, above all to make you MOVE!

Music-making, not money-taking...

true, but you already are different. you're you. a unique individual. don't try to look for something that's not there. just be yourself.

Interesting... we (Bmore House Headz) are in the process of having this same discussion.
What has defined a DJ as "great" *to Me* is...
A DJ is Great When or If:

*They have the ability to make you dance and not get off the dancefloor.
*Gets the crowd involved in the mix!! Singing the vocals or adlib'ing.
*If the DJ is partying their dayum self behind the tables, enjoying the mix and the crowd.
* makes a blend sound like a new song
*Is inventive and not scared to derail from the norm of what is being done by the popular dj's
*If they have produced their own hot azz record that has other dj's spinning it
*is CONSISTENT !!!!!!
