What the @#$%*# what is this for?

Anyone know, racks & racks of singles with this plastered over them in shops all over town...

I feel like picking them up and walking out of the store with them, anyone know the legal implications if I did?

Donnie - Cloud 9 Shelter Remix, could then be mine, all mine I tell you

Promos are sent to record stores so that the buyers can order. Sadly in this day and age the music industry looks the other way while the buyer sells the promos and of course there are always legit DJs out here who deserve the promos but didn't get them. The whole system is screwed up right now and won't get better for a while.

very true bigpoppa another problem is distributers are now not passing these promo's out to shops they are selling them to shops normally at a higher price too.
the donnie is a good example I ordered this and was told they had a few in stock when the box arrived they where promo copies at a higher price!
makes me MAD distributers seem to get sent way too many copies of certain titles they only need one to hear it the others should be shipped to shops direct and more importantly DJ'S

Interesting insight guys, it just struck me as I saw the Donnie single everywhere last night, it was a Promo only and even HMV were riding with it.

But looking at BigPoppa's explaination, then how did HMV, Shibuya,Tokyo get 80+ copies of this promo? Do you think they have 80 dance buyers in Japan?

So Blackwax, you're saying that the distributors are getting promos for free and then selling them to retailers, so stealing a copy is not getting back at the bad guys :(

One might consider this. If the particular recording is well beyond the promotional cycle/campaign -- year or two after release, then I think it becomes irrelevant.

Kept in mind that the promo's are the earlier pressings....there4 the quality is usually better ......providing of course, it was pressed and cut correctly.

Ps

An expiration date might be conducive

uhhhh...nooooo that's not the way it happened with the donnie record. it's a legitimate release for all you promo freaks that love to show off your big 12" white labels. if you actually think distributors receive 500 promo copies to listen to, you are .

it's a marketing tool. look at any ibadan recording. they're mostly all promos. vinyl is pretty much exclusively a dj's market so labels cater to their impulses.

Is it also sometimes a tax loophole for labels?

The "System" of promos is used and abused
as a method of compensation in lieu of real wages:

I don't know how much has changed, but back in
the day, a large number of label employees had
easy access to promo CDs and vinyl.

Rec. co. VPs, Promoters, secretaries, and even
the mail room workers would get easy access
to promo material and sell it to record stores.

The labels knew damn well that record reviewers
would wind up selling the promos that they did
not need or want.

Of course, lots of DJs who deserved a promo copy
would wind up paying a small fortune for them
at Dance Tracks or Disco-Rama or [fill in the
name of your favorite store 10 years ago.]

The "record industry" has almost never cracked
down on stores that abused this system...I
think maybe once or twice did they actually
raid a store in NYC, years ago, in the 80's.

At least one well-known indie house label in
NYC presses lots of "promo-only" vinyl which
is actually specifically for retail sales!

Pretending that a release is promo-only
is a form of advertizing hype.

One of the many downsides of this whole system,
especially 10 plus years ago, was that the sheer
number of promos that sold cut into what little
money/sales the artist was due.
As usual, the artist got/gets screwed.

Now with the crackdown on Intellectual Property
theft, there's more control over promos,
especially in the digital format.

You can see the immediate result:
promos that get resold in retail stores
as "used" are fewer and farther between.

And new music is _way_ overpriced, IMO,
so naturally the general public
is downloading the shit for free.

Not to jack this thread, but what's the deal with "labels" like X-Rated, HTF Classics, etc. putting "FOR DJ/RADIO USE ONLY" on their bootlegs? Does this somehow exempt them from prosecution by the copyright holders?

Yeah... I always wondered about that too.

A small handful of labels have legitimate permission from the big record companies:
X-Mix,
Hot Tracks,
Razormaid.
DMC,
SIN (ARE THEY STILL AROUND?)
Promo Only,

and a few others.

Lots of shady bootlegger types are "frontin"
and trying to look like legit subscription mix services, but they're not.

The retailers aren't always the bad people in this situation. As a former buyer I couldn't even count the amount of times a label sent me promos to resale as new product.

one good thing about the stickers/stamps/printing is that they ensure the label will not accept the product as a return from retailers (who try it all the time otherwise). This is why you find vinyl with cut corners or cds with holes drilled in them. Don't try to sell us back product you didn't pay for to begin with!

So we're being played, it's a marketing ploy, it's a promo, ergo, we're some special DJ up there with the greats, only the big boys/girls have this little mutha here...

If that's the case why is there a rack of 80 Cloud 9's in HMV today?

It's diluting my buzz knowing that the 'general public' are getting their hands on my lovely promo only Shelter Mix

Simple, relationships...that or payola! How many times do you hear about a hot single only to find it's sold out by the time you get to the store, or all the copies that came in are reserved for certain people. The distributors are really screwing up a lot of small labels because of there games....late payments back to the companies, playing favorites all over the board, etc.

PS yes here is a HUGE house scene in Japan.
