Would you say, regarding the Hiphop style of DJ'ing, that Brooklyn did it earlier than The Bronx when it came to rockin' the breaks with two copies of records?

Don't really know who was first, so I've resolved to only speak on what I experienced. Pete DJ Jones is about 10 years older than I am. He, Maboya and Flowers were out there before me. Rocking the breaks with two records was around before me and I jumped on the scene in 73 during the summer at Riis Beach. There was QJ from Brooklyn, who was around from about a decade prior to me and who mixed with tapes - reel to reel tapes - and was quite good. Alot of his stuff was pre-mixed, but still good. We with the multiple turntables brought spontaneity into the equation. I think it was 1974 when I met Sedley B who became our voice (sounded just like Hank Spann) and in 1975 we included the "City Steppers." Pete who was from the Bronx had KC on the mike and then Flowers followed suite. Although we were competitors, we copied all the cool stuff from each other.

Regarding the Hip-Hop elements, I'd have to divide it into three categories; the mix, spoken word and dance.

    • Flowers was (IMHO) the best all around mixer of the mobile crews. He brought many of funk elements from both the R&B world and the Rock world (i.e. He was the first one I heard play the Mexican by Babe Ruth and mix it with James Brown), which caused me to expand my own horizons.

    - The best technical mixer of the mobile crew was this young fella from Brooklyn named Gregg (don’t remember his last name). He had just graduated from Eramus Hall HS and hung out in the gay clubs. The women and the better dancers (hustle in during those days) tended to follow him – they didn’t feel threatened nor pressured to deal with a lot of drama. I don’t know what ever happened to Gregg, though he wasn’t on the mobile scene long. His dance crew began accompanying me from club to club, which is how I ran into Sedley B.

    • Sedley was the best rapper - sort of a combination of Baptist preacher, WWRL radio jock (i.e. Gary Byrd with Hank Spann voice) and since he was a dancer, he had an impeccable sense of timing.

    • The City Steppers (group of teenager hip-hop dancers complete with cardboard) were like gymnasts on steroids (just a metaphor).

The one thing I’m can look back on those days and be very proud of is that however we carried ourselves (lots of confidence) no one in our crew was into the drug scene.

I'll have to get back to you on the mixes. I haven't spun in years, although my signature break was to extend the James Brown Sex Machine Live cut and break into Love is the Message - MFSB where James says "Fellas do you want to hear it like you did on the top, Hit it now 1 2 3 4 -CUT-- into the break of Love is the Message" and then extend Love is the Message, alternating between the instrumental and vocal versions.

fletch- imo, i'd have to give the pluck crown to larry graham man seeing that he came on the scene slappin and pluckin in the late 60's. back in the 70's, there was a similar debate regarding graham and stanley clarke...they 'agreed' that graham founded the technique and clarke took it to the next level(radioscope radio show, late '70s)....i concur and love all 3 but give me clarke overall because at any given time he'll bust out that upright and bow and drown a cat wit his own kool-aid n' shit....good stuff though.

Yo Plummer....some of the Steppers are still around you know? Mike Dungee (Rubberband) still goes out and so does Doc occasionally. I saw Flame some years back but I'm not sure if he still hangs.

[quote=rplummer;1073476]I wrote the following a few years ago in response to a Mike Barnes question regarding mobile jocks having opportunities to check each other out.

I worked so much there weren't many opportunities to check out other clubs, but I did whenever I could. When those opportunities presented themselve we checked each other out because getting in was free (promoters loved the marketing opportunity). There were the little kid games like Flowers darkening his record labels, but we pretty well knew or could with a little research find out what he was playing and he knew we would. All in all the competition was pretty friendly and cooperative. There was more than enough work for those of us who were fortunate to have our names splashed all over the radio (WWRL and WBLS) and plastered on flyers found all over the city.

The other jocks I remember from that era 1972-1976 and had great relations with were most notably Peter DJ Jones, Flowers, Maboya, the Smith Brothers and QJ.

The clubs I remember playing at regularly (with my own equipment) were Jimmys on West 52nd. Street (formerly Toot Shors), Downbeat, Kings Palace (formerly My Way), Walterios, The Raspberry Freeze, and others I can't remember the names. Lot's of colleges (NJ, PA, NY).

The first gay clubs I visited (other than the jocks I met at Richard Longs loft) were Hollywood (a bar on forty something street in mid-town - Francios K) and 99 Prince Street (where I met David Mancuso). I knew Dave Brockington from Baruch College (took a couple of courses there to keep fresh) and that he was getting into the scene. Later I met Tee at Better Days, Larry Levan and Walter at Galaxy (dont know if they remember me it was really representative of two different worlds). The music was very different as well; very high-spirited the entire night and with much better sound and light systems. I believed that most of the top jocks at the gay clubs were much more experienced mixers who staged something akin to Broadway productions (sound effects and all), although they didnt have any rap or stepping. We mobile jocks came primarily from the African-American, Caribbean and Latino communities and as such played a lot more Caribbean (Ska, Reggae, Calyso, etc.) and Latino (Cuban, Puerto Rican - Salsa, Dominican, etc.) music. We also played a wider range of R&B and kept one of the house party days traditions; pepper the night with slow ballards (Teddy Pendergrass, Barry White, Whispers, Blue Magic, Manhattans, etc.).

The best thing that happened I think in 74 or 75 was the establishment of the record pools. The record companies were getting tired of the increasing number of jocks looking for free records and didn't hadn't developed a good model to gauge the potential of emerging artists and songs nor how to effectively find target markets for this ever expanding music (please no payola references). David Mancuso's Record Pool was the most successful and was the one that I joined. I was one of the lucky one's along with Peter DJ Jones, Flowers and Maboya who had developed good relations with the record companies and recieved alot of demo records, but it was alot of work.

I had retired to become the road sound engineer for the Trammps (76-78) by the time DJs like Flash began showing up on the radio. Thats another conversation though.

I found during my cleanup a copy of a magazine, Discotekin' from 1976 that featured a series of articles about the Brooklyn DJ's. This board compresses the image so much so that I don't think the content is readable. Will look for an alternative route, possibly email for those interested.

    Peace,
    Ron

I remember two clubs on Nostrand - (1) up by Eastern Parkway in a basement a sure firetrap with one entrance, and (2) down the hill in the vicinity of Empire - but I don't remember any details.

After I won the DJ of the Year in 75 (Harris and Lindsay), I was heavily booked into alot of colleges throughout NY, PA, CT and NJ. Riis Beach is where I initially made my name in '73 care of positive nods from Frankie Crocker and the rest of the WBLS crew who were throwing basketball benefits. I remember Frankie the next day (Monday), mentioning how you could hear us coming off the bridge from Brooklyn.

    Mike,

I don't think I ever knew his last name, although it probably is because Gregg practically lived at the Garage. I'm still in touch with Sedley who might know. Will get back to you on that.

What ever happened to Greg Meyers?

I'm cracking up Mike! I was never a stick-up kid nor did I go by anything by Chuck or DJ Champagne. I DID play Harlem World in like 78 tho...one of the better experiences i've had. John Jay had a fashion show there and I was to DJ the show but after the show the house jocks showed me mad love as after the show they let me get down after seeing what I could do! I wish I could remember who was holding down residence at the time (it was a 2 man crew) because it made me feel at home ya heard! I didn't play ball at the spots you mentioned but I have to say at some point my J vacated me so eventually my game was all PG but in my "prime" (lol) they used to call me RADAR and before service I would start chanting "Blip Blip Blip" before draining! Dude I have a feeling we've met but would love to get up just so we could see if that were so and if not just laugh at how small the world be!

Pete and I never built Mike but I knew of him. Ernie (God rest) was a friend of mine and I went to a lot of his parties (fondly remembered as the "Space cowboy) I still see his son rom time to time as well I think Smalls was from uptown from what I remember too.Charlie Rock may have been the one who told me to stay on the set after the fashion show Mike. I'm pretty sure it was him.

Count-JC was a Dj, Who had some MC's, Who were down with him(I cannot remember the names of the cats rhyming for Count-JC, Right about now/LOL), Chuck, I rememeber Count JC rockin at Coney Island Projects(Around the Surf ave area, Close to the F-Train Stop), And, At Grady Highschool(Off the Belt Parkway and Ocean Parkway in Brighton

Founding Fathers(Legendary Dj's from Brooklyn and Queens during the 60's/70's). Repl

Plummer, Do you still keep intouch with Pete Dj Jones my man, Plummer, It seems to me, That alot of the Dj's on the Dj circuit in New York during the 60's/70's, Were mixing on Thoren turntables, Plummer, I was never a Dj, But, From what i understand, Thoren

Turntables, Did not have a pitch control to change the speed of a plate, Which, Made it very difficult for a Dj, Not to know your plates, In regards to mixing/blending(If a Dj did not know his or her music, Back in the 60's/70's, Mixing on Thoren Turntables, Which no pitch control, Would put a Dj in a very bad situation in regards to rockin a spot, Allnight to the morning lite my man/LOL.
