    Medicine In Action

Medicine in Action is a non-profit global medical organization dedicated to providing quality medical and surgical care, founded by Karolynn Echols and Deborah Chong. These two doctors met during their residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. They immediately bonded as each sensed the other's sensitivity in providing healthcare to underprivileged people. It was during the first trip to Jamaica in December of 2005 that MIA was born. Since then MIA has become a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in the USA and continues to grow in interest from doctors worldwide.
MIA was founded in the spring of 2006 and is dedicated to providing quality medical and surgical care to people in underprivileged countries with a focus on women's healthcare issues. Through education and an emphasis on good health we strive towards the empowerment of women worldwide. Through our medical missions, MIA also provides international exposure for residents and medical students. We believe this practice breaks down cultural barriers and contributes to the development of globally sensitive physicians.

We welcome volunteers for our future missions, both medical professionals and para-professionals. We ask new volunteers for a monetary donation for patient expenses($500 for physicians and $300 for non-physicians). This donation is waived after your first mission trip. Residents and medical students are exempt from this donation. Each mission is approximately 10 working days. There will be both surgery and clinic opportunities as well as community based education. You may prefer to plan a trip for two weeks so that you leave time to sight-see at the end of the mission. Both countries have a lot to offer. For example, in Jamaica- there is scuba diving, beaches, waterfalls as well as hiking to Blue Mountain peak. The Serengeti is just two hours away from the health unit in Tanzania and you can go on Safari after the mission. Tanzania is also home to exotic Zanzibar and Mount Kilamanjaro.
