NAKED MUSIC recording artist@SHELTER 4.26

[Prince HiFi]

Just prior to the 9/11 slump in sales, Naked was about to break overground via Astralwerks with that perky, smooth, chill sound. They might have succeeded too, as they had mad appeal with the post-raver demographic. Since then, they have struggled like other house labels and their moment may have passed as post-ravers have moved on to more angst-ridden sounds (DFA, Metro Area, electroclash). I heard Naked Music's WMC party described (by house people) as "too experimental" and "sucked".

I think it will be interesting to see where this label heads next as they clearly had a vision and worked hard.

Any thoughts on this anyone?

Personally, I don't see any reason not to play and support that type of house. Honestly, much of the West Coast stuff sounds very similar to the Solu tracks and Ananda releases (Chris B has released on a few West Coast imprints), which get a lot of support on the East Coast. The danger with generalizatrions I agree with. In my defense, however, I would like to point out that all the rocking naked cuts are the earlier things from when their sound first dropped, some of which came out when I was still in DC!

For the most part, week after week, I listen to new stuff that comes out this includes the new Naked stuff, and they have not gone anywhere with their sound.

IMO Naked Music will have to change to be relevant anywhere in 03. 18 months on from 9/11, house is firmly back underground again (in sound and profile) and 'electronica' has shuffled off (it's &lt;i&gt;so 2001&lt;/i&gt;).

Clues about where Naked is headed might be taken from featuring Metro Area as Djs at their 02 WMC party, and "experimental" sounding djs at their 03 Miami do. My feeling is they are still chasing their 9/11 -dashed 'electronica' dreams by following the "D.O.R./Dance Oriented Rock" crowd around and that they will become increasingly irrelevant to underground house music.

I heard a rough draft of the Lisa Shaw debut full length a few months ago, and all of the songs except for one was under 110 BPM's. Most of them were under 100 BPM's. I would describe it as being smooth and pleasant. Nothing groundbreaking, though. Wait a minute, did I just describe their entire catalog in a nutshell?

One more thing, quit generalizing everybody that lives on the West Coast into one group, okay?

another thing that i don't understand is the "lounge" tag. this is straight up dance music. the voice is very laid back so the music has to fit the voice. you don't see sade doing gospel house. next people are going to be saying you can't dance to Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield.
