FRIDAY MAY 15, 2009 // SONOTHEQUE // 1444 W. CHICAGO
MORGAN GEIST
(of METRO AREA, ENVIRON - NYC)
+ LONO BRAZIL
(DISCO UNUSUAL SOCIAL CLUB - CHICAGO/NYC)
With SAMONE SR71 ROBERTS
The May edition of Jackson takes on a disco aesthetic as we welcome ENVIRON Records chief and finer music afficionado MORGAN GEIST for his first appearance at Sonotheque. One half of the incomparable METRO AREA (with Darshan Jesrani), Morgan's "Double Night Time" full length was released to critical acclaim in 2008, topping end of year lists the world over. He returns to Chicago for his second Jackson performance! The evening's theme continues as we welcome the sublime LONO BRAZIL for his debut appearance at Jackson. With a storied history in the music industry, the scene stalwart's current monthly endeavor - the Disco Unusual Social Club - regularly blows the roof off of Danny's tavern in Bucktown, and we're floored to finally have him at Jackson. Samone SR71 Roberts rounds out our transmission, bringing her unique brand of effervescent disco stylings to Sonotheque in what will set off a night of boogie-down jams from start to finish!

MORGAN GEIST
(of METRO AREA, ENVIRON - NYC) This New Jersey native was initially inspired by England's take on the sound of Detroit, but eventually tracked techno back to its Motor City innovators. When he began listening to music, however, it was the sound of early-'80s synth heroes like Devo, Severed Heads and New Order alongside early hip-hop, jazz and 60s Hindi film soundtracks.
Geist released his first 12" (via Dan Curtin's innovative Metamorphic label) while studying at Oberlin College in 1994. He formed Environ soon after, releasing powerful statements of purpose which showed his affinity for the more emotive strains of disco, techno, soul and all flavors in between. His debut album was released in 1997 and licensed to EastWest/Warner.
Geist continues to run Environ today. A highly-regarded remixer and producer both solo and as half of Metro Area, Geist has lent his touch to a wide range of artists including Hugh Masekela, Telex, Erlend Oye and The Rapture.
A Chicago native and New York resident, Lono Brazil has been living in Los Angeles for the last 10 years and working as a Radio Show Host(KPFK 90.7 FM), DJ/Producer/Remixer. Also a former Executive at Capitol/EMI Records. He is better known in the music industry in Hip-Hop circles as an Executive Producer/Artist Manager launching the careers or working with artist such as The Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, Foxy Brown, Channel Live, Spragga Benz, Ras Kass to name a few. Brazil, who owns the Cottage Grove label, has introduced some of music’s most influential artists to the public through his work with EMI and his monthly events at Sonotheque in Chicago and APT in New York City. Originally from the first wave of Disco Music Producers, DJ/Promoters from Chicago, Lono was instrumental in bringing Disco, House, African, Latin and Electronic to the forefront of the music scene and is still to this day regarded as an true ambasador of Quality Music.
