Actually, this is not true. James Brown was in jail during the early days of sampling and such. Not coincidentally, his music was getting jacked while he was in jail and couldn't do much about it. When he did get out, he went on a rampage and sued for his sh*t. His law suits pushed the boundaries of copyright law.
Peace

"if i ever get lonely when i'm old i'll just go to a deep house night.. there will be plenty weeknight lounges around in the not so prime areas of major cities.. where the deep house retirees will come together to sip tea and whisper "fayaaaa".

No disrespect to Dolemite, but he sort of derailed the topic at hand. We aren't talking about bootlegging, or releasing records or even sampling recoirds and making $$$ off of said record/production without the artists consent.
We are being told that we can't do our own exclusive edits as DJ's to play out in the clubs or mixshows to fit into our format or styles etc. IMO that's not a wise stance to take, and it is a completely unrealistic to take this stance within a culture that was partially created and advanced by these very practices.
Where would we be without Ron Hardy's edits inspiring a young generation of producers and DJ's? Where would we be without Walter Gibbons take on Ten Percent? What about Grandmaster Flash cutting records? It's always been the DJ's take on recorded music that helped advance this culture.
it is the same subject though, because music industry folks are taking the position that a dj playing a song or re-editing it = self promotion = profit which is sooo ironic considering the dj's are actually promoting the artist. like i said, it's just bitterness, greed and jealousy...
I see your point, but to use your analogy, those actors successes and/or failures do not hinge on your patronage as you are not charged with exposing their work to the masses.....
In this case, dj's have been called on the carpet relative to his music even to the point of suggesting that it is illegal to have one of his songs in your mixes, so if you can't put it in a mix, if you can't make it dj friendly for playing at the club, why would a jock need his work at all.........
PE is not a household name, it stands to reason that if he has an opportunity to get his music pushed to higher heights because of a rework that is being kept close to the vest by the jock and not for sale, he would be receptive to it, even if it's on a guarded level........
And I'll add this, even if he or his reps had a problem with something that was done to his work, this was not the venue to epxress those feelings and/or concerns, it was in very poor taste.......
