perceived benefit or not, I'm pretty sure it most certainly IS illegal to put any song on a distributed mix without permission, regardless of selling the mix or not
same goes for manipulating existing copyrighted work for playing out live or whatever
don't get me wrong, I do this every day, but I am fully aware that I am breaking the law

Or if I am fire fighter, am I going to come ask for some of the money on your house I saved after you finally sold it???
Shit, maybe we should take a hard stance, and start hitting Peven up for money every time we play one of his tracks. We'll see how he feels about that.
Or maybe Peven should just allow this working relationship Djs have had with artists for the last 30+ years to continue to grow.

Well on the most basic level, Djs wouldn't exist without pre-recorded music.
However DJs really benefit from creating their own styles, developing their skills, constantly working, putting out demos, rocking crowds all over the world, or even just in their home town. They benefit from years of hard work, with or without one Peven record.
Hey, if Peven doesn't want DJs to play his music the way they want to, that's fine. It is just unrealistic, and it will hurt him in the end, more than it will ever hurt a Dj for not playing one of his tunes.
I am not saying Peven is "wrong" for that opinion, I just think it is unwise.
Many artists have been unhappy with remixes of their music, properly released by the label, or not, however it is often these remixes that help make the artist's career. But it is how the artist chooses to deal with it that is making this thread a trainwreck.
OK so after all this where are we??
I mean everyone here knows Peven will not be able to really walk away as it has become apparent in this thread. Does this mean we stop buying /downloading/ remixing his rekkids or do we start doing remixes and posting em here..

This reminds me of the story regarding Tom Moulton and BT Express where he basically re-edited and extended one of their tracks (I forget which one). BT Express hated that version with a passion, but once it blew up on the radio and on charts they were more than happy to take credit for it.
