"We're not just dancing to have fun-we're dancing for survival. We're dancing to save our lives." PTT
The better analogy is I buy a copy of Starry Night for $100. The copy of a priceless piece of art being $100. In my own home I decide I want to work with this Iconic image and paint a sunset. Is it better is it worse? it really doesn't matter, I played with this image I purchased and then had the audacity to take a snapshot and share it on FaceBook.
Artists can not control DJ's, get over your fucking selves. MHD are you really suggesting that I contact every artist I have ever put on a mix and ask them if I have permission? Where is my benefit? Following the law is of no benefit to me. The artist in this position, Frankly, can go fuck themselves and there is nothing they can do about it. Nor should they be able to.
If this was some how effecting the purity of the original creation I might be sympathetic. But I am yet to ever see an argument that held any weight in proving this.

so where do No Shows and showing up extremely late for performances fit into this schema....?
its a bit hypocritical to scold a DJ for remixing and editing your music without consent and/or rec'ving royalties for it then in the same breath you are booked (money spent to promote the event you are headlining) ... given monies in advance in some cases and your band makes it to England or Miami but YOU DONT? or youshow up Maaaaaaad late to a gig... and you establish a reputation of being a no-show, unreliable, tempermental, and an overall bad investment from a promoter/venue owner POV.
Your professionalism or lack thereof costs people money yet you are here yacking about how someone is dissing you costing you revenue?

I will concede this is slippery and grey. But ..... If you truly are not putting it out there and are simply customizing it for your own sets and play then I see no issue. Furthermore in a digital age and in an age of DJ's (not guitar heros) it is a forgone conclusion that the information you create and put out there is going to get manipulated. It is grey but it is uncontrollable. We should come down hard on those that try to profit (bootleg) it. But artists need to stop with the hate. And the divide between producers/artists and dj's grows and the artists not the dj's are the ones that seem to be downing the bitter pills, pointing the fingers and acting like they wish they could keep a leash on Dj's in general. Unfortunately for them that power structure is never going to be a reality.
On anther note all this mess will not make me think twice about purchasing, dancing or (lol) editing any of Pevans music if I choose to. The whole boyscot thing is a silly as the intitially accusing finger pointed in the dj's direction. So I agree completely with you on this point. LOL, like what kind of asshole is gonna be dancing up a storm at the SHelter while Timmy is breaking one of his remixes and be like "ahh shit it is time for me to sit down and put in earplugs a Peven song is coming on". That idiot would be missing one of the highs of the party.

the big thing lost in all this is that popular dj's are well liked, go out and party to music constantly, have lots of friends and contacts and are tastemakers that people turn to for cultural knowledge. why would you want to shit on these people???
