I will report that while they're still confused, Japanese taxi drivers are warming up to the idea of tips coming their way. My 2 weeks there had a lot to do with it.

I'm tired of tipping appropriately or beyond and hearing these workers complain when they don't get the amount they want from others, while at the same time many make wayyyyyy too much for serving beers. Compared to others in the service industry that bust their asses for minimun wage without a tip, it kind of disgusts me.
The problem with the thread is a sense of entitlement. And I agree that there are service folks who bust their asses. Bartenders aren't one of them IMO. You pop the top off a beer and hand it to me and I should tip you 20% for that? GTFOOH.

To be fair, 20% of a bottled beer is like $1 most places. Don't you usually tip a buck to a bartender?

Also, it should be noted that bartenders haven't had a pay raise in decades — it has been customary to give them $1 per drink for ages (and their $2.13 an hour salary doesn't do much to supplement...)

    That's why i tip $2.

A dollar per drink is fair. $40 on a $200 tab is not. Not for the service provided. What do you tip the people who clean your hotel room? Wash your car? Wait on you in a restaurant? All of those are far more labor intensive than pouring me a shot. They get tipped better because of it.

The truth is, most people don't want the type of people who wash their cars and bedsheets to be the same kind of people who pop tops off their bottles. The kind of people most bar goers want to see cost more money. Plus, there is history and tradition in who gets tipped how much... people who take these different jobs have different expectations based on existing traditions. So, these comparisons are kind of crazy.

Again, this is a question of etiquette, imo. It is considered apropriate to tip a waiter 15%-20% in this country. It is customary to take business cards and bills with two hands in Asian countries. You don't have to do either, but it is considered rude by many of those around you for you to break with custom.

All of that info is irrelevant. I tip based on service. Fuck existing traditions. Just because something is a tradition doesn't make it cool or right.

Well it's certainly your right to believe this... but you can't be too surprised that some people view your breaking of a custom to be rude (and hence you cheap). That's how tradition and etiquette work.

Out of curiosity, if you were out with somebody who you were trying to impress (a client, a date, your favorite celebrity, etc.), would you be as quick to dismiss the 20% tipping custom?

Being cheap incompasses far more than what you tip.

I only dismiss it for bartenders (I have tipped far more than 20% at restaurants). And would do so no matter who is with me. I don't use money to impress people.

I am happy to tip for a 'real' drink or round of drinks, where the bar tender has to make some effort (cocktails etc). But filpping the cap off a bottle after trying to swing their bottle opener around like they are in some Kung Flick is a bridge too far.

My tipping works on a give & take basis, if I know I am in a place for the whole night and that it will get busy, I'll hit a decent tip on the first round and then try and use the same person for the rest of the night. This usually ends in some free shots for me/crew and more tips for the bartman...win/win.

Massive example of this not happening and what screw the rep of most barman would be when I was at the WMC years back at one of the Clevelander parties. Was stood right next to a mini bar (a bin of bottled bears, nothing else and a barman), and hitting rounds left right and centre. Tipped the first few rounds, but as the rounds turned into hours I finally stopped tipping on every go...only fo the exact same barman to give me sh1t and start ignoring my orders when I did wtf???

D1ckhead was literally reaching 6inches to the left and popping a bottle top and expecting 20% tips for each effort, talk about loser.

Good barman get tipped, idiots don;t, simple.
