    a little announcement/
Yesterday I saw "Inglorious basterds' in a movietheatre.
Before the film started the "THX" logo was presented and after the movie
the "Dolby digital" logo was presented.

    I rest my case.

I must say, I don't understand why the 120GB Slim is priced the same as the newly repriced 80GB fat (or, for that matter, why the 160GB fat is $100 more than the slim). What do you get in the fat that justifies paying for the extra power consumption and less storage?

    Never knew. Good tip.

I'm still decideing what I'm going to treat myself too. I really want Fifa soccer but the 2010 version is out in october so it makes sense to wait.
I'm think grand theft auto and metal gear solid for starters.

The MGS series rules! I started playing them in sequence again. About to finish 2 and will start on 3 real soon.

Meh... Not a big fan of the MGS series. GTA4 is the shit though. I'd say go for that.

Yeah, that one is good as well. Planning on getting Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5 next.

    Any ideas?

I might buy when they finally announce a real release date for Gran Turismo 5.

Lots of praise for the game, but I haven't played it yet. I'm still trying to work my way through my long list of games I own but haven't finished. Among those in the list are Assassin's Creed, GTA4, Bioshock, and a couple of the DLC for Fallout 3. Till those titles are finished, game purchases are temporarily suspended. Hopefully by the time I'm done, Infamous will be on clearance. hehe

The new PS3 slim is a harware redesign that is much, much cheaper for Sony to manufacture. The old consoles were already selling at a significant loss for Sony and they are taking an even deeper loss on them with the price drop. Only way they will clear them out I suppose. The 160GB comes with a game. That's why it is more but it is only $350 not $400.

I would just get the Slim if I were you. From what I know, the only difference between the models is the Slim bitstreams high definition audio streams instead of decoding them in-console like the older models. I assume this allows for lower power consumption. There was some initial worry about not being able to swap the HDDs in the Slim, but it's already been announced that swapping is still possible and recommended. The smaller form factor, lower power consumption, and lower price should make your choice an easy one.

But why have they priced the 80GB at the same price as the Slim?

On paper, the Slim seems to be the obvious choice, but I feel like I must be missing something... why wouldn't they just price the 80GB cheaper to get rid stock before replacing it with Slim?

Larger losses on hardware. Add to that the availability of the slim will be somewhat limited to begin with and it's not as counterintuitive as it might seem.

Sony is still losing money on the hardware, even the Slim with its cheaper 45nm Cell:

Got mine yesterday too. I love the new look. More in line with what the PS2 looked like. Looks a lot better under the TV next to mah 360. Watched Wanted on it last night.
