Police are investigating a possible arson at Stereo nightclub, a popular destination on Ste. Catherine St. E. in the Gay Village.

A female employee of the bar discovered the fire after hearing a bang at around 4:15 a.m., Montreal police said.

The establishment at 858 Ste. Catherine St. E. sustained major damage before firemen could extinguish the fire.

Police don't yet know how or when the fire was started, but called it "suspect."

The club had been scheduled to launch an extravagant five-day grand reopening on Sept. 3 after working for more than a year to revamp the club after a fire gutted it in July 2008.

The rumor is that the Bikers that run the rival afterhours did this. The rumor was they torched it the first time as well.

Montreal police are still investigating the circumstances of a suspicious fire that broke out this morning at Stereo Night Club, 858 Ste-Catherine.

According to preliminary information, it is an employee of the bar which has sounded the alarm after hearing from the outside, a "small explosion" around 4:15 this morning. Entry, she noted that the flames ravaged the interior. It is unclear whether an accelerant was used.

A Tuesday morning fire at the popular nightclub Stereo in the Gay Village was arson, Montreal police confirmed.

The fire started shortly after 4 a.m. and was put out in less than an hour.

After an investigation, an arson squad confirmed that accelerants were found on the scene.

The blaze marks the second time in just over a year that the popular destination at 858 Ste. Catherine St. E. has been targeted.

Stereo was scheduled to launch an extravagant five-day reopening on Sept. 3 after a fire gutted it in July 2008.

No one was charged in that arson. The police have no suspects in this morning's blaze, either.

"It's still too early to say if the two are linked," said Montreal police Constable Annie Lemieux, who also commented that the accelerant was "not a Molotov cocktail."

A female security guard discovered the fire after hearing "what sounded like a small explosion" at 4:15 a.m., Lemieux said.

The three-floor building sustained major damage before firemen could extinguish the conflagration.

Arson investigators are still on the scene.

David Morales hasn't had anything to do with the club for over a year, it burned down the first time shortly after his departure. A departure I might add that was in no way acknowledged with any kind of party or announcement. I was there the last night he played and there was definitely something going on that night that wasn't normal. There were a couple of visitors in the DJ booth that did not look welcome.

Montreal has long history of gang violence/intimidation and corrupt municipal politics. My hunch, and it is only a hunch is that one of the two or both are involved in this scenario. It's really a shame that it's come to this.

Wasn't Angel Moraes an owner or Manager of Stereo?

Angel built the original Sound system, and he created the new one as well.

He also started the short lived Stereo in NYC

there are many places where the various stereo stories have been told, even by angel himself. this board is hardly a source for global information about clubs and djs around the world. if dhp were a newspaper, it would be that small local paper you get for free in a bag thrown on your lawn but never read, covering local parades and pics of the new town firetruck and a page dedicated to the school lunch menus.
