Oprah Winfrey Ending Talk Show Run On Network TV

Harpo President Confirms Oprah Winfrey Ending Talk Show Run On Network TV
Thu Nov 19, 3:06 PM PST

Oprah Winfrey will announce on Friday that her popular daytime talk show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," will end its run in 2011, Tim Bennett, the President of Harpo, announced in a letter released to ABC affiliates on Thursday.

"Tomorrow, Oprah will announce live on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' that she has decided to end what is arguably one of the most popular, influential and enduring programs in television history," he wrote in the letter, obtained by Access Hollywood. " The sun will set on the 'Oprah' show as its 25th season draws to a close on September 9, 2011."

Bennett said he was sending out the letter to keep the affiliates from being surprised at tomorrow's announcement.
"Before she speaks to her loyal viewers, we wanted to share her decision first with you - our valued partners for more than two decades," he wrote.

And he urged the stations to "share this news this evening with your colleagues and viewers."

"Oprah's personal comments about this on tomorrow's live show will mark a historic television moment that we will all be talking about for years to come," he added.
Just a few weeks ago, a rep for Oprah said the TV queen planned to make an announcement by year's end about whether she was planning to make a leap from her current daytime talk show to her previously announced cable channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

It appears the decision was one that was made only recently. Just two weeks ago -- at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in New York City -- Oprah's best friend, Gayle King, said Oprah was still weighing her options.

"I know she's thinking," Gayle told Access. "I know she's thinking."
But Gayle said she wasn't playing advisor over the decision, just longtime friend.
"Listen, Oprah and I have been friends since we were 21 and 22 and now we're 54 and 55," she said, citing her and Oprah's ages, respectively. "We talk about everything but she's a big girl. She will make the decision that is right for her. No question about that. Whatever that is. It'll be the right decision for her."

Previously, at the September Toronto premiere for "Precious," a film Oprah executive produced, Oprah revealed she was still putting in the deliberation hours.
"I haven't made a decision yet and I have until the end of the year," she said. "But you know I think that deserves more thoughtful consideration than a red carpet."
No details were available about the rumored move to OWN and a rep for Discovery was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Access.

Her presence did change the neighborhood she set up shop in.

Washington/Carpenter is better because of Oprah's time in the area.

All things must come to an end eventually, 25 years is a long run.

She supposed to tell her staffers, what it means for them, tomorrow. The speculation was that Harpo Inc was also moving to LA, where Harpo Films, reside. I'd imagine they'll be getting a nice Severance payout.

I shoulda hung in there, 3 more years.

Well, I didn't get one of those G6s, but the Woman is pretty generous with Employee perks. 7 Weeks vacation, Bonuses twice a year, and Show goodies, made it hard to Leave, When I needed to. I'm not much of a groupie, so the Celebs, coming and going, never made me starstruck, or anything.

While I recognize the institution that Oprah has founded in our city, I can't support or praise it as it was founded on misandry. She made her fame and money by demonizing men on her show and I can't ever forget or forgive her for that.

Yes, I know that since then, she's done some good on her show and beyond, but I can't honor her because that would be like saying "yes, slavery was bad but because it helped build America, we should forgive it." "Good works" built on a foundation of evil is simply a "beautiful house built on a rotten foundation."

I, for one will not be sad to see that testament to male bashing finally removed from television.

Whatever the reason the show is going away...I'm just glad to see it finally going away. I also understand that this is not a negative thing for her, but a choice she made so she can concentrate on other endeavors.

However, I have no love for the woman because of how she got to where she is today; by the public and open demonizing of men.

I ask Chicagoans....do y'all predict any other exits? If so, and if they are, what can be done to reverse the trend.

Tyrus Thomas will soon be leaving us...and I think most of us will help him pack....

As for the question at hand, I don't see the correlation between Oprah's departure and the Olympic Bid....obviously, she has a lot of goals that is bigger than her show at this point...and I would think that the studios here would remain......she knows what her presence means to that neighborhood

I used to work for Levy Restaurants at McCormick Place. The unions been gounging Exhibitors, for decades. I was lucky enough to hit a few CES(Electronics) shows, when we still had em. But, I believe Plastics is a bigger loss than ARA.

Oprah will be missed plain and simple..My realtives somehow got tickets and came all the way from ATL just to go to the show..The amount of tourism and capital that she has generated for this city is immense..She is a Chicago Icon..Has funded numerous scholarships and done quite her part to give back to the community..Job well done...

"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn’t there,” she says. “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”

This is a quote from an interview Oprah Winfrey did for Newsweek Magazine. Although I'm aware of her philanthropic contributions around the world, and how a quote can be taken out of context, I cannot understand why she chose to single out American inner-city school children as materialistic. In America, mothers of materialistic inner-city children tune in to her show, which hosts a segment titled "Oprah's Favorite Things". Luxury items, expensive weddings, and vacations are a few of the things covered. In this hyper consumer driven society, that her business thrives within as a marketer's wet dream, why doesn't she understand that those at the bottom of the social/economic rung desire the things marketed to them: all the things that are associated with wealth, and abundance-the good life. My impression is that she's allowed her show to propagate the mindless consumption that these senseless, materialistic inner-city parents, and school children alike value, that she doesn't understand. Is this an example of the misandry that Krag Shot mentions in his post? Now it seems like a demographic which she built her empire upon (inner-city women) by male-bashing is being thrown under a bus along with their wretched school children, who don't seem to have the sense it takes to learn.

Anyhow, I'm sure her move to tinsel-town will bring her to new hieghts of success and philanthropic generosity.
