Thankyou Washington...now if I can only get out with only two losses... GT hurt because I had them winning another game.

    Kansas' Sherron
    Collins has big fan
    in education
    secretary Duncan

    By Erik Brady, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Arne Duncan hasn't had time to fill
out a bracket, but the secretary of education knows
whom he is rooting for — Kansas.

It's not because the Jayhawks are tops among the
No. 1 seeds in the men's NCAA basketball
tournament, but because he is such a fan of senior
    point guard Sherron Collins.

"He's a kid I've played with since he was a freshman
in high school," Duncan says. "He's a winner. I
watched him mature, and I've seen what he's
    accomplished."

Duncan is an avid basketball player who often plays
with younger athletes. These pickup games came at
Crane High School, where Collins went to school,
back when Duncan still lived in his beloved
    Chicago.

"He comes from a very, very tough neighborhood
and has done the right thing, stayed in school,"
Duncan says. "He's a tough kid from Chicago. I'm
biased, but he's got a lot of heart.

"He's obviously got one championship (in 2008),
and I'd love to see him get another. He's the kind of
kid where the right experiences changed his life f
orever. Having watched him since he was 14, it's
nice to see him have the opportunity he's having
now. That's sort of what it's all about."

    Collins remembers Duncan.

"He's got game," Collins says. "We played a lot of
pickup when I was in high school. He gave me a lot
of advice about how to act on and off the court,
about choosing a college and stuff like that."

Duncan stops short of saying he knew how good
    Collins was going to be.

    "I remember saying this kid — well, I couldn't say I
could see him doing this, but he was something
special and you could see it very early on," Duncan
says. "We would go at it, and he would want to win
    every single game.

"We'd have the older guys playing the younger guys,
and we'd win some and he didn't like that. You want
    that competitiveness, that toughness."

What set Collins apart, Duncan says, was a high
    hoops IQ.

"Sometimes you see a kid who can make one great
pass and three terrible ones," Duncan says. "I
remember when he was a freshman and he played
varsity, it was amazing to see this 14-year-old kid
    and his decision-making ability.

"And he wasn't as strong, and he didn't shoot the
way he shoots now, but I got to see the way he
distributes the ball. I just remember it was so far
ahead of where I was as a freshman in high school."
