Almost the end of the year, there's been some good music this year, some...

My pic for house music album of the year:
Silence in the secret garden by MOODYMANN

My pic for "non house, yet house" album of the year:

(1) The Detroit Experiment

(2) Good bye, swing time by the MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND (I play this over and over at work!)

What are your pics?

I hope there's alot more to come because its mainly been rubbish to these ears. I thought the Detroit Experiment LP and Madlib were major disappointments ("Stepping Into Tomorrow" being the exception) - I didn't expect that much from the Andres but it's a little better than I hoped for. The Moodymann is good, but not great. Best for me is Joakim's "Fantomes" and The Bug's "Pressure". I've also been listening to Dizzee Rascal's "Boy in Da Corner" on repeat.

The last three you mentionned don't ring a bell... care to expand? What style, etc...? Inquiring mind wants to know.

For me, it's been the London Elektricity album, Fallacy's "Black Market Boy", the new Moodymann and Little Louie Vega's "Elements of Life" (a whooping $40 on import!)

Joakim LP on french label, Versatile. Joakim's the guy behind Tigersushi and it sounds like it: loads of Krautrock, Detroit, Industrial references with a French house twist. The Bug is an IDM guy, Kevin Martin, gone dancehall featuring, amongst others, Tikiman. It's fierce. Teenager Dizzee Rascal's "Boy In Da Corner" album deservedly won the UK mercury prize. It's a UK Garage kind of thing. He produced and rapped on it, and it's self deprecating and very funny.

Album-wise it hasn't been that spectacular, not really a stand-out one, but these spring to mind:

Russ Gabriel - Into The Unknown
Larry Heard - Where Life Begins
Detroit Experiment
Andrès
Moodymann - Silence In The Secret Garden

and my pick of the year:

Gangstarr - The Ownerzz, yes, it's hiphop ladies and gents :D

Unbeatable album of the century is still Charles Webster's 'Born On The 24th Of July' IMO.

DJ Spinna 'Here 2 There'
GangStarr 'The Ownerz'
DJ Oji 'The Underground Xperience'
Little Brother 'The Listening'
b-sOuL 'My Way'

Either in the car or on the decks, I've had something from these projects bangin' all year.

Really liked Larry Heard's full-length "Where Life Begins." that's one that grew on me fast and is still very much in the rotation.

Spinna's "Here to There"...well...wrongly assumed there would be more dancey grooves on it other than "music in me."

On another note, I thought Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief" was pretty bangin too :D

Reel People - Can't Stop

+ DJ Pope's & Oji's respective albums, proves that in this day & age, it's still possible to produce great albums of house cuts. (esp love the 'fingers' track on Pope's CD)

Common-Electric Circus.
Got it? Good. Don't got it? Get it. Good.
Was it 2002 or 2003?
Who cares, that's my pick, and I'll stick.

You obviously had certain ideas about what you expected, but how was the LP different from those ideas? Just curious...
