    Peace DHP Fam,
I'm leaving the hard knocks of the Chi (actually Bolingbrook, I can't front) and I'm trying to get a feel for the "state of house music" there now. I also welcome any other info about ATL that you might want to share (best: underground spots, records, equipment, etc).

CHI shout outs will come later.

Yo Touchable. I can give you my 5 cents of low down on the ATL. And I'm orignally from the Chi too so I see the great reverse migration is continuing. I lived here from 1990-1995 for college and have recently returned after living on the west coast for several years.

In my opinion, the state of house music here is kind of on fertile ground. You'll find that, like Chicago, Atlanta is very segregated. Everything here is Black or White, especially the clubs. Black folks have their own spots and White folks have theirs. Very little mixing. For (black) Atlantans, Hip hop, R&B, and Reggae is the overwhleming majority. Unfortunately, black folks down here don't do house music. Even in gay clubs, which almost always played house, more and more play only hip hop and top 40 R&B.

There are a few places that gets the techno/Paul Oakenfold/Sasha & Digweed type of crowd, but there's really only one spot in Atlanta that plays great soulful house and its MJQ. My boy Kai Alce has been the resident there for a few years now. They play great music on Saturday nights and surprisingly is very mixed (racially, sexually, and gender). I personally don't go there because the place gets PACKED, really smokey, and often has (in my opinion) an opposing mix of folks in there - those who are there for the music and are trying to dance, and those who wanna get ****ed up drunk and stand around on the dance floor and talk to each other. I always end up geting frustrated going there. Anyway, I digress.

If you're a DJ like me, Atlanta is certainly a place that is not oversaturated with house parties. The scene could definitely use a few more. But if you're just a lover of great house music and want to go out to dance on the regular, unfortunately your options are few. It's funny, when I lived here in the early 90s there were so many great house parties going on (that I DJ'd and went to) but the hip hop movement has certainly "taken over" and it seems house went back underground.

I was recently offered a night a club/bar and just started my own party on Tuesdays called SOULution (893 Peachtree Street) and I have definitely been feeling the challenge of cultivating an audience. I play soulful vocal house, classics, Latin & African stuff. And I certainly have felt that there is a lot of "educating" to do (to sound a bit snobbish). I would love to get a good mix of all people in there but the club is traditionally a gay club so I know that will definitley limit who will walk in the door, even though there's good music playin'. It's really too bad things are so segregated.

Well, I hope I didn't sound too negative. There really isn't that much going on for house headz down here. Outside of that, Atlanta has a WEALTH of stuff to offer on so many levels. I'm glad I made the move to come back South.

If you like I can give you the skinny in other areas of what life is like here. Hope the post helps.

    Peace man.

Yoooo TurntableSoul , I got that "Soulful Sounds 2" crankin' as I type (tight stuff cat), that first joint with the horns let me know where your head is at. We have the same vibe with the soulful, classics, Latin & African (peep my flavour on http://www.bringtheheat.com/Clubmixes)

Like you, I'm also coming down primarily for school (phd at GSU or Clark) but I'm planning a longterm stay. I'll be down to spin a few when I get settled. You down with Mood's Music in Lil' 5 points?

Keep educatin' em and I'll be down to SOULution to check you out.

If you should happen to know a thin and tall (a little over six feet) dancer by the name of Joey Washington, tell him I said what up!! He's originally from Hartford, CT, went to Atlanta to attend Clark U back in the mid-90's and never came back. I hear that he's still there somewhere. He's a madd house (and hip hop) head!

Thanx Ultra, I've been to that Krogers, didn't know MJQ was across the way. I'm looking at apartments around there (Ponce off of Moreland). How's that neighborhood?

tone- while you're in atl, check for this cat named chico gholston. he's originally from chicago(a former muzik box/cod's head). in fact he's been down there less than a year. this cat is an animal when it comes to playing heat and record shopping. he's also a record dealer. he's mixed at some spots down there but i'm not sure where. he has a lot of rare shit but i don't know if he'll play it for the atliens. knowing him he will because he doesn't give a ****. if you're into rare disco and 80's euro, check for this cat. if not, at least go hear him because he's that good. check the stores that sell old cuts. the dealers there probably know him. he also has a web site. here's my email if you're interested: trentgroovz@mailcity.com

You sound like you got the 411 on the area...hope you don't mind if I hit you up later when I get more specifics. Some Gtech grad students told me that I could get bigger and better for my money if I looked further out (Stone Mountain, Jonesboro, etc.) What's your take on this
