Unhappy Destin Hernandez (teen shot and killed in dolton) was a close friend of mine...

I was a close friend to this young man. We attended the same church and I taught and mentored him several times. He came to church with his aunt who is a close friend to my family and his mother who is also friends with my family and the church. I'm actually still in a daze because I talked to him on Sunday and now he's gone. He was a honor role student just walking home from school. I'm going to miss this young man. Keep his family in your prayers and in your memories.

May 24, 2010 (DOLTON, Ill.) (WLS) -- An honor student has died after being caught in gunfire shortly after classes ended at a south suburban high school Monday.

The 15-year-old boy was one of two people shot. The other victim survived. Police are asking witnesses to come forward.

The shooting happened in south suburban Dolton at about 2:40 Monday afternoon near Sibley and Oak.

That intersection during the afternoon is usually crowded with students from nearby Thornridge High School who are walking to a restaurant to get something to eat. It was one of those students, Destin Hernandez, who was walking home when people across the street from each other started shooting. One bullet struck and killed Hernandez.

"He's a wonderful young man. Very adventurous, very imaginative, very artistic," said aunt Jacqueline Henry who calls herself a second mom to her nephew.

Hernandez, a freshman and honor roll student at Thornridge, was on his way home from school when he was struck by a bullet and killed, getting caught in the crossfire of people shooting at each other at Sibley and Oak.

"We are still in disbelief. We're disillusioned at this particular time but his spirit still lives with us," said Kenneth Cole, stepfather.

Hernandez's family is trying to take comfort in his achievements - like getting straight As in school and creating artwork. Those who knew him say he made quite an impression.

"With a student like this who is striving to make something of himself, it is a tragedy," said Michael Winston, former principal.

Winston stopped by the Hernandez home to pay his respects Monday evening. His mother was appreciative but silent. Meanwhile, police are hoping witnesses with information about what happened won't stay silent. They say the offenders were on Sibley across the street from each other when the shooting happened, with a gun shot hitting Hernandez as he was passing through the parking lot of Baba's Steak and Lemonade. Another adult was also hit and is in fair condition.

"It's tragic. It's a young man, minding his own business, going to school. He did nothing to nobody," said Lt. Harry Blaundin, Dolton Police Department.

Dolton Police say they have several good leads and have identified persons of interests but no arrests have been made. They say they will be at Thornridge High School Tuesday to help with crisis management.

Sad to hear this... The shooting was right around the corner from where my brother lives. He just so happen to be in the gas station when the shots rang out. My condolences to the family of this young man.

My condolences to Destin's family and friends. His death seems so ridiculous and senseless.

We have to start somewhere, our young men are killing themselves for nothing, but where is it starting?

In the homes. Where parent(s????) have been falling down on the job for at least a generation or more.

Broke my heart reading about Destin again in the paper yesterday. Please let his family know that there are lots of people who are sad/enraged about his death and wish them healing.

    Thumbs up

Excellent homegoing service. Hard to believe that over 200 youth was there and no one was fighting or shooting each other. Destin was a special kid. He was an artist ( had numerous paintings on display some you would see in an art gallery ). He was a poet (had written a poem about love that was so amazing it blew us all away.) and was smart since he started school as a child. Was atop of all his classes every year. His teacher talked about the poem he wrote and how it touched her so much as she was grading it on Monday that she was on her way to recommend him to the American Society of Authors and Writers when she got the news about his death. At church Sunday he requested a song........the day before he died.......Two Wings was the song. This song was sang today and the audience was so moved by destin and the events leading up to his death. One of his close friends spoke and said that he and destin had spoke about death recently. That if he died would he cry and would he come to his funeral...this isn't a coincidence......destin was not in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was doing what he was supposed to do. It was evil that was at the wrong place at the wrong time. But he is in a better place.
