    From Hardware to Software...

    Another question for you Dennis.

In the late 90's, I came from working on old keyboards (Roland analog stuff, an ARP, Yamaha FM synths), a sampler, a Mackie console, a bunch of cheap DBX comps, multi FX units and tracking to DAT. Not exactly "high end" gear, but for the time, it worked for me. I used Logic as more of a sequencer, rather than a DAW back then.

I could no longer afford the expense (or space!) for all the stuff, had to sell the console and some of the gear to move more towards working ITB.

Now - Even with MIDI controllers, I really haven't been able to get my mojo working almost strictly on a computer though (I still use a little bit of outboard). It kills my inspiration to stare at that screen, as I feel like I'm "programming" instead of "jamming"!

How did you make the transition to working on computers, without losing the "vibe" you felt when you worked with all hardware on consoles?

It amazes me when producers can do this, while retaining their creative energy.

    Thanks!

number one rule if you're coming from hardware like i did and you wanna go ITB

find a controller like a Novation SL that provides feedback to knob turning.

Automap all your plug ins...and you don't have to look at the screen. It brings back the old hardware turn the knob feeling.

Go and dig up the info.....you'll feel the creativity spring back in again.

    That's what worked for me.

Thanks! Yeah, I've tried working with a Behringer BCR2000. It has no screen though, so keeping track of what parameters the 32 knobs and 18 buttons are assigned to for all your different plugins is really frustrating.

Maybe something like the Novation would be a better choice because of the LCD screen?
