    Gimme the loot!!!

Ok, here's the senario.....tell me what you think P.........

you book 2 "headliners" and one "opener" for a night, you guarantee them a wage prior to the event...standard right? Ok, about 1 week before said event, one of the headliners backs out due to medical issues, thats cool....health is more important, no problem there.....but now the other headliner contacts me and says...." since the other headliner has cancelled, I'd like more money..." ????? ok, so technically I have saved money because of the cancellation of the other dj, but does it mean I should pay the others more??

Kinda similar thing happened before.... , I booked a new york dj.
After looking into his flights, accomodations, work permit and so on I gave him my total budget approx $2000...he agrees....then a few days later he calls and says...." I can drive there, so you can give me the full cost of the flight in cash, I can stay at a friends house so you can give me the cost of accomodations in cash, and dont worry about work permit, you can give me that in cash too, since I ll get over the border with no trouble anyway..." Driving would only cost him about $200 in gas, a flight would cost me $580 ( at that time)...accomodations would cost me about $320 (two nights hotel 4 star), work permit about $200 and his fee would be $800. considering his idea, he would actually be pocketing $1700.....how would you guys look at this from both points of view, promoter and dj???

    thanks for reading.....

You shoulda flipped that shit on him, cause dj's don't like when promoters try to nickle and dime them.

"You don't need a room, since you can crash on my couch."
"You don't need to fly,you can catch the train...plus it's scenic this time of year."

    Shit Jamie...you said it.....

I try and be fair as possible, because I was a dj before I got into promoting events, I try and give as much respect as I can to the dj, I always guarantee payment, I pay djs as they walk in the door, not after. But peoples always seem to want a bit more, and by giving a bit more it doesnt mean I am getting any more either....right?

Regardless, I have etiquette and want to be fair, I take lots of losses in the name of HOUSE, but its always been important to me to pay the ARTIST whether the party is a success or not.

I know most of this board has djs, some are active regularly...I want to hear from you guys...

    what would you guys expect??

They need you....you are the one hiring folks and no one needs to know all of the behind the scenes shit. So,learn the lesson..stop telling all ya business...especially to folks you are hiring.Unless it affects them directly, they don't need to know of any cancelations.

I actually don't see a problem with either scenario.

Scenario #1: If there were 3 DJ's booked & a 12 hr party. That's 4hrs per jock. You drop 1 DJ that's now 6 hours per jock, but realistically your opener isn't going to play into headliner hours so now that sole headliner has gone from playing 4 hours to playing 7 or 8hrs. More cash is only reasonable. You're asking him/her to perform more.

Scenario #2: I think it's kinda cheap on the jock's part but in the end you set a budget & you were expecting to spend that much money to get him/her there. The total cash outlay on your part hasn't changed so who cares where the money goes? If the jock is willing to suck up all that time/energy/gas instead of just hopping on a plane, that's on them. It's the same thing as taking the per diem rate on travel and staying in a Budget 8 & eating bologne sandwiches.

The only downside I do see regarding scenario #2 is if the jock flies into town & stays at the hotel, it's a more controlled environment for you. You know they are in town, you are their transportation, you manage their time to a certain extent and you can ensure they are at the gig on time.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Peace

so if the original offer is 800 and dude is pocketing an extra 900, for a total of 1,700, if he is that pressed he will prolly do the gig for 500

While I agree that you have to keep some of your business close to the vest, I do think it's absolutely important to keep jocks in the loop in the event of cancelations (or additions) when they are on the same bill out of professional courtesy.

I don't like walking into a gig thinking it's one thing, only to find out it's something completely different and not finding out till the last minute. Thats the sign of an unprofessional promoter IMO.... and that's not even just on a money level.

Prior to a gig I like to imagine through some ideas for what I want to do for the night... where I want to go musically, etc and kinda map out some ideas for what vibes I want to create & when... walking in and finding out the entire map of the evening has changed fucks that all up. Not saying I couldn't overcome it relatively easily... but it does cause unnecessary disruption.

I also think it's only fair to compensate appropriately/accordingly if a jock picks up the remaining time on the night.

    Peace

Unless some cats here have experience on doing out of town/country gigs,ya'll are just talkin' loud.....because this situation he posted is rare.

Don't think for a minute that a foreigner is gonna let you pull some shit like what's been stated.

Jocks that are pressed for a gig don't negotiate upwards.
