    Firewire 400/800 Port | Mac

    Hello Dennis,

Question: Since Mac have done away with 400 port, and only allows one (1) 800 Port. How can a user utilize two (2) firewire hardware (A Motu Firewire, and Firewire External Hardrive) at the same time while using the mac.
If Daisy Chaining is option, which hardware will be the main plug in to the mac, while the other chained up to main device.

Lastly, will Daisy Chaining these two (2) firewire hardware slow down process, or functions. Thank You. Have an awesome day

    Sincerely
    Wil Milton

yes, daisy chain them. It shouldn't slow them down. I have never actually daisy chained anything though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I have a 800 hard drive plugged into my imac, then I have my Presonus firewire mobile 400 going into the hard drive, works just fine, even works with the hard drive turned off.

Firewire 800 supports up to 16 devices daisy chained.

Is there any particular order recommended that you should daisy chain in, soundcard , then hardrive or vice versa ?

I saw hkilp7m8's reply, was looking for some other thoughts

Thanks for the question Wil , something i'm just dealing with for first time now since i've gone mac totally.

I don't think the order really matters, the computer sees the device and that's it. Somebody else may have different input.

If you are going to be daisy chaining your hard drive, back up your data first.

    Hello Cedric,

You are welcome. I was curious on why the latest mac's only came with one 800 firewire connection. Perhaps many of the older mac's logic boards were blowing out with both 400/800 firewire ports used at the same time.

The logic boards goes out, forget it, something Mac doesn't really share with their consumers. Have an awesome day

    Sincerely
    Wil Milton

I tried it the other way around and hard drive didnt work if sound card off. Works fine hard drive then sound card.

Another option is to use an expresscard. This adds two more ports to your mac...
