The British designer John Galliano has been sacked by the fashion house Christian Dior, in the wake of an alleged antisemitic rant in a Paris bar.

Galliano is the star designer at Dior, but was already suspended over the incident last week, which led to him being questioned by police for five hours on Monday.

Dior acted after a complaint was made over an earlier episode in the same bar.

A video clip surfaced online, apparently showing him drunkenly declaring his love for Hitler, and declaring to a non-Jewish woman in the bar: "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers would all be fucking gassed."

Dior's chief executive, Sidney Toledano, said in a statement the company had begun procedures to fire him. "I very firmly condemn what was said by John Galliano, which totally contradicts the values which have always been defended by Christian Dior."

The firm added: "Today, because of the particularly odious nature of the behaviour and words of John Galliano in a video made public this Monday, the Christian Dior house has decided to lay him off immediately and has begun firing procedures against him."

Earlier the actor Natalie Portman, who is Jewish, and under contract to the company as the face of its Miss Dior Cherie perfume, issued a strong statement to the Associated Press, saying she was "shocked and disgusted" by the video.

"In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."

It was seen as a deliberate distancing of herself from Dior when she wore a dress by another designer to collect her best actress Oscar on Sunday night for Black Swan.

Galliano was due to present his autumn-winter collection for Dior on Friday, and his own collection on Sunday: the firm has not said whether either show will go ahead.

In last week's incident, a Jewish woman and her Asian boyfriend alleged he heaped abuse on them in La Perle bar, saying: "Dirty Jewish face, you should be dead" and "Fucking Asian bastard, I will kill you."

His lawyer denied he had made any antisemitic remarks, and said the designer was lodging a counter complaint with the police for "defamation, insults, threats and aggression". However, at the weekend a second woman spoke to police, reporting a separate incident in the same bar last October.

Galliano was born in Gibraltar in 1960 and educated in London where he studied at St Martin's art college, but has lived in Paris for the last 20 years.

He is a familiar figure, with trademark moustache and flamboyant clothes in the arty Marais district of Paris. He became head designer at Givenchy in 1995 and at Dior the following year. He has been awarded the French Legion d'Honneur and a CBE for his work.

Paris prosecutors are expected to decide by the end of the week whether he will face trial over last week's incident.

PhotosCostume and fashion designer Patricia Field, famous for her work work on Sex and the City and Ugly Betty, has come to the defense of designer John Galliano. Earlier today, French fashion house Christian Dior announced that it cut official ties with Galliano, after he allegedly hurled anti-Semitic epithets at customers of a Paris cafe.

Field blasted a message to friends, media, and blogs, which she also posted to her Facebook page and titled, “IN PRAISE OF JOHN GALLIANO.” The cryptic statement read: “Beauty, intelligence and energy would describe John as I know him. Where in this trilogy could one find hate? I ask you! My second question is…What exactly did he say? And the third is…What is really going on here??”

Field followed up the statement with a call to fashion industry bible Women’s Wear Daily, where she gave an interview further defending Galliano. “People in fashion all they do is go and see John Galliano theater every season,” she said. “That’s what he gives them. To me, this was the same except it wasn’t in a theater or in a movie. John lives in theater. It’s theater. It’s farce. But people in fashion don’t recognize the farce in it. All of a sudden they don’t know him. But it’s okay when it’s Mel Brooks’ The Producers singing ‘Springtime for Hitler.’”

Field continued, reiterating that she can’t understand how people don’t see the theater and farce in Galliano’s actions. “They don’t even see the farce in it. Fashion people who know him have not come forward. They know his theater,” she said. “Believe me — my name is Field — my stepfather was Jewish.”

I fully expect a cast of characters from the fashion world to come out and tell us how not Anti-Jewish John Galliano is, a la Roman Polanski/Child Rapist. Can't wait.

That said, nothing in the video seemed Anti-Jewish to me.

Yes. I didn't hear the word Jew, or anything like it. I watched the video on its own without taking into account the reporter's take on it.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think so.

edit--Just watched it again: He said he loved Hitler (not by itself anti-Jewish, IMO. Stupid though), and someting about gassing this woman's mothers and grandmothers. I can see how it could be taken as anti-Jewish.

Designer John Galliano, who was fired by Dior fashion house for making anti-Semitic remarks in a drunken rant caught on video at a Paris bar, left France to enter rehabilitation on Wednesday, reports the New York Times.

He was urged to seek treatment for his alcohol problems by close colleagues and friends including supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, the Times says, citing anonymous sources. While the treatment center is not known, it is likely that his destination is The Meadows, a facility in Wickenberg, Arizona, where Elton John and Donatella Versace were treated in recent years, says the paper.

Meanwhile, Dior tells AP that Friday's Fall/Winter ready-to-wear fashion show in Paris will go on as scheduled.
